No output from second dGPU

Hello manjaro community,

I recently added a GeForce GT 1030 which I want to use as my sole output card for my monitors.
The GeForece RTX 3080 I already had in my system I want to use only for heavy cuda computation. Therefore, I also added the simple GT 1030 so rendering does not impede the potential performance of my 3080 at all.

I’m opening this thread now since unfortunately I was not lucky to get any output from the GT 1030 by now after fiddling with it for several hours. There seem to be no hardware issue (gpu or motherboard), as the card is detected and also working out of the box on windows - no configuration or anything needed. I can also simply switch the HDMI/DisplayPort and the output is adjusted to the card in use.

In manajro I don’t get any output from the GT 1030 at all.

What am I missing of have wrongly set in the xorg.conf? It seems to me the card is correctly recognized by the system and there are also no errors reported by the kernel.

I also tried to adjust my bios and select slot 2 as default without any success - still no output. At least not as long as in grub/bios/manjaro.

Thank you in advance for any direct help or hint!

Cheers,
K.

In the following some system information and outputs while still using the RTX 3080 for output. Let me know if I should add more stuff.

  • Board: ASUS B550E
  • CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 3600
  • GPU1 (slot1): RTX 3080

  1. The inxi output is incomplete and we lack some basic information from the full output to help you specifically.
  2. As you seem to have a PC and not a LT, I would:
    • Remove all Graphics drivers

    • Remove the 3080 physically

    • Install graphics drivers again with only the 1030 in the system using automatic detection:

      mhwd --install pci nideo-nvidia

    • Insert 3080 again.

    • Install CUDA.

Thank you for your reply! I’ll try our what you suggested in 2. and will provide further information as soon as I have done so.

Regarding 1. I edited the original post and attached the full output of inxi, I hope now its complete and you don’t lack basic information anymore.

Thanks. You’re on an LTS kernel and that’s good, but unfortunately you’re running on Gnome, so I can’t provide any more specific information than I’ve already provided.

P.S. Except, you should activate swap, but that has no influence on the problem you’re having.

So I tried out the steps you suggested, but unfortunately it did not work as expected - allowing also output from the GT 1030 on slot 2.

However, I played a little bit around and figured out that when switching the PCIe slots - GT 1030 in slot 1 and RTX 3080 in slot 2, then it behaved exactly in the opposite way, meaning there was not output from the RTX 3080 anymore, but from the GT 1030.
Also, when I remove the card from slot 1 and only use a card in slot 2, then I receive output from that card - despite which one it is.

Since this issue is not happening on windows and there output is working on both cards, I still think it has something to do with the settings/linux-drivers rather than limitations by the motherboard!?

Nevertheless, for my cuda computations I can have the setup with placing the 3080 in slot 2. What’s still a bummer is for occasional gaming I’d like to still utilize the 3080, for which I thought I’ll simply switch the cables. I guess nvidia-prime could help me out here, but a first quick try did not give me nearly as good fps as when outputting directly from the 3080.

Regarding gnome I’d actually like to understand what’s behind unfortunately if you don’t mind telling

P.S. Also, thanks for the swap hint! I was so exited about finally having a system with 32gb that I did not even think about it (yet).

Well, then it depends whether your CUDA calculations need a GUI, because if they don’t, you can create an additional grub entry to boot your system to a console only.

Would that be a solution?

I migrated away from Ubuntu / Gnome to Manjaro / KDE because:

  • Snaps
  • Gnome’s “minimalist” approach: the devs are removing functionality and I had to rally a ton of votes on a problem I had where they removed the possibility of shutting down Gnome by pressing the power button.
I did get the functionality reinstated in the end, but it’s not something I wanted to spend time and effort on, so I’m on KDE now: lots of bells and whistles that me, myself and I decide whether to turn on or off…
