Sound not working after upgrade

My sound devices are all over the place after the update this morning. Sometimes no devices are loaded and sometimes only my USB headset loads. The soundcard on the motherboard never loads after reboot.

have try with others kernels ?

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux57
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux58

reboot press Esc for appears Grub
and select in detail kernel to launch

Kernel 5.8 did not work.

Kernel 5.7 worked the first try but when I rebooted none of the devices were detected. The audio devices change every time I reboot.

Any other ideas?

have you checked in journal ?

sudo journalctl -b0 -p4

There are hundreds of lines of output in this journal and I don’t see anything about sound devices.

have you try with theses options added on boot kernel
“iommu=soft”
or
“iommu=pt”

for a try, go on Grub ( pres Esc on boot )
(e)dit boot command
be careful your are in us keyboard

I am uncertain where to add these to the boot command once I get to the emacs editor in grub. There are many lines and I need to know where to put it or doesn’t it matter?

just add by insert , use arrows ( always use a space as separator for next word )
F10 ( test only for this boot )

I tried both of those options but neither worked. :frowning:

I’m having the same issue after updating - no output devices will work at all, even a USB headset. The only workaround I’ve found is to boot from the advanced boot options, when I do that even 5.8 sound works fine. Just selecting Manjaro from the menu does not work though. I have Manjaro and Windows both installed on different SSDs.

please get information about audio devices with

alsa-info.sh --upload

and post link to data uploaded to alsa-project

@j00jitsu suggest you start a new topic and post your system information in the same manner as OP

@j00jitsu Just out of curiosity, what motherboard brand are you using? Mine is MSI and I’ve seen another post with a sound issue on an MSI board since the update.

Unfortunately, I have to have sound to do my work, so I had to install another distro, so I could be productive. It’s unfortunate because I would have liked to have solved this issue.

I may be open to doing a clean installation of Manjaro again to see if the same thing happens but I’m leery of losing another days work.

Would you see any value in troubleshooting on a clean installation? If the sound works on clean installation then it may break again on another update.

I’m having same issue since update my audio is disabled or not loaded. I will go into the audio settings and under analog stereo output sometimes there are multiple options listed and sometimes just a few. I use Analog Stereo Output 5.1 surround. And I can get my sound to work when the option is there but when I do a fresh reboot it is disabled again. This was working prior to update. I too am using a MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard. Here is my information:

@Gatorman60 We are using the exact same motherboard! MSI B450 Tomahawk. Looks like this could be a hardware issue for us. I’ve always used Gigabyte motherboards for my builds and never had issues until now.

Since update this has been very buggy. I just did another reboot and Analog Stereo Output 5.1 is missing and only 2.1 and 4.0 are listed. I’m tempted to try to use timeshift to go back before the big update but I will wait and see if anyone can help us first. Driver issue? I guess it doesn’t matter what kernel as I’m using 5.7 and you are using 5.4.

Booted again and now Analog Stereo Output 5.1 is available. Once I select it the sound works from all speakers. So as long as I don’t turn my PC off or restart they will remain working. So not a great option.
Also I have been using Manjaro for a few months now after breaking away from using Windows all my life with this rig and things have been pretty stable with a few quirks like the Power Savings not being able to keep my monitor turned off after a period of inactivity. It tries to but it comes back on. And my desktop icons will not work unless I open the start menu. I have been able to live with these. I went with Manjaro at the time since it was the only one I could get to work with my AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT. So hopefully we can get it fixed

Congrats on switching from Windows to Linux. I’ve been using Linux for 20 years and Manjaro has been extremely stable on all my machines for the last 3 years so this is my first real issue. Don’t let this experience sour your view of Linux.

I’m having the same issues as you with devices and options changing on every reboot. Kernel 5.8 didn’t give me any devices at all. 5.7 seemed to be the best and 5.4 isn’t much better.

Sometimes changing distros is the only option but Timeshift may save you.

@nikgnomic is the sound master so hopefully he will help.

Thanks. I was just about to try 5.8 so you saved me the trouble. I will stick with 5.7 for the time being. I never used timeshift before to restore older system so I’m a little hesitant. So I will be patient.

I just updated the BIOS on my motherboard with the June BIOS update. It’s been a long time since MSI updated the BIOS on these boards and it includes AGESA improvements. You can see a list of the improvements here: https://itigic.com/what-is-amd-agesa/

Update BIOS at your own risk but I’ve never bricked a board in 20 years.

I’m going to do a fresh install of Manjaro on the machine now and see how the sound goes.
