Sometimes when I boot up my laptop it's just black screen

I have Manjaro i3wm installed on my Acer Aspire A315-35.

Sometimes, when I turn my laptop on, it doesn’t go to the lightdm login screen and just goes black. I just press the power button to turn it off then turn it on again and it doesn’t go to just black screen anymore. Is there a way to fix this?

We know almost nothing about your system

So we might start with that.

But my first guess is dual-boot with “Fast-Startup” enabled. :crystal_ball:

(This windoze feature really just means it hibernates instead of shutting down … then the held power button forces a full power cycle.)

I replaced that OS with Manjaro completely so I’ll just need to find a way to disable fastboot and hopefully the black screen don’t show anymore.
I’ll find a way

You should be able to get into the BIOS settings by pressing either the DEL or F2 keys immediately at power-on (these are the common ones for Acer laptops).

If you’re thinking of the Windows “hibernate” feature (Fast Startup), this won’t be an issue if no Windows installation remains.

Hopefully by not skipping certain BIOS checks (Fast Boot) it will improve things. Worth a try.

I gave it a couple of weeks after enabling Fast Boot but it happened again today, unfortunately. I only have Manjaro installed on my laptop. :frowning:

Fast Boot in firmware has nothing to do with hibernation. The configuration - when enabled - skip enumeration of devices not needed to boot the system.

As @cscs points to it is an issue returning from - deducing from your config - hibernation.

s2idle instead of deep

As you system also supports s2idle I suggest testing by disabling hibernation and use s2idle.

Backup the two configuration files in question

sudo cp /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.bak
sudo cp /etc/mkinitcpio.conf /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.bak

Then edit the files and remove the following and save the files

  • grub: CMDLINE - remove resume=UUID=edce5ce6-d5c4-4d43-87ba-52a2e599b21b
  • mkinitcpio.conf: HOOKS - remove resume

Then rebuild init and grub config - when done reboot

sudo mkinitcpio -P
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
reboot

Should you want to return to the original - simply copy the .bak files to the original and rebuild init and grub config.

Kernel

Sync kernel 6.12LTS - see if it makes a difference

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux612 rmc

Searching

If this does not change the behavior - do some extensive research for the specific system Aspire A315-35 using keywords like Linux error resuming from hibernation.

If you don’t get an immediate result - rephrase the search - try with different keywords - the order of the keywords determines importance - the answer is there… find it

same here,
for 3 weeks now, once a week i boot into a black screen with the mouse cursor.
pressing the power button turns off the PC normally,so upon reboot i have no error messages.

i also have that resume=UUID= line but i never use hibernate.
Fast-Startup is disabled.
