Sometimes I boot up to a blank screen. Sometimes it works just fine

Sometimes when I startup I just get a blank screen. I can press Alt+F6 and startx from there. It seems to happen only after the first startup of the day. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

You could start here.

Thanks. Once I experience it again, I’ll try the info.

I shutdown and let it sit for a few hours. When I started it up here’s what I got. What should I be looking for?

sudo dmesg -l emerg,alert,crit,err,warn

Now, this has been going on since I installed Manjaro Gnome about a week ago. I’ve tried downgrading the kernel to 5.4.60-2 LTS. For a time it seemed to work but it came back. I tried going to 5.8, again it seemed to work then the issue just comes back.

Can you post your /etc/fstab file?

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a device; this may
# be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices that works even if
# disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
UUID=260c331a-ce37-421e-b75f-696a4df21616 /              ext4    defaults,noatime 0 1
UUID=8b3f4d8e-89ca-47ef-800c-08fce76aa125 swap           swap    defaults,noatime 0 2

Deleting default.target seemed to fix the problem.

Turns out the problems still happens. It’s just weird that sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t.

Found a solution in a thread titled “[SOLVED] Gnome (GDM) wont auto start on boot” in an archlinux.org forum:

Solution was to Unlink /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service and the again enabling gdm service with systemctl enable gdm.service.

hi, this is the same solution for the
“watchdog did not stop” message ? I have to press ctrl alt delete to make it work again.
And could u point a step by step guide for this solution? i don’t know where to begin with it.
thanks

  1. I removed default.target:
rm /etc/systemd/system/default.target
  1. I unlinked display-manager.service from gdm.service:
unlink /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service
  1. I then enabled gdm.service:
systemctl enable gdm.service

In the thread that I mentioned ([SOLVED] Gnome (GDM) wont auto start on boot), user WonderWoofy stated that:

When you “enable” a service, systemctl parses the [Install] section of the systemd.service, and uses that information to determine what it will do. In the case of gdm.service (as well as other display managers), they are aliased to display-manager.service. When the graphical.target is enabled, or booted to, it pulls in the display-manager.service as a dependency (Wants=display-manager.service). So it looks for that service in the usual places and runs that, whatever it is. So it will find the “enabled” /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service and run that. In this case it is a symlink that points to /usr/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service.

So what KaiKratz did was manually delete the symlink /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service. Then he used systemctl to re-enable the gdm.service. Presumably, the symlink must have somehow been borked, or pointed to the wrong place. So recreating it allowed to to fix it and point to the correct destination.

Regarding the “watchdog did not stop message”, I assume you’re talking about the shutdown message? If that’s what you’re talking about, I masked the service with:

systemctl mask mkinitcpio-generate-shutdown-ramfs

Hope this helps. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the detailed step by step.
I did first step and it says there is no such file or directory. So maybe my issue is a little bit different from the issue posted originally.
The thing is that sometimes boot up a blank screen and i have to press ctrl alt delete, to make it boot again properly.
And lately is mostly asking to choose Manjaro. On the GNU GRUB screen.

Thanks

Hmm it’s possible it could be something else. You could skip the first step if default.target is already gone.

Alright , so with step 2 it says “permission denied”

That means you need to use sudo.
