Something's broken

Hi!

After moving to newer hardware (i5 6600k => i7 13700) I get various troubles with a freshly installed Manjaro. The most annoying ones are the two below:

  1. I moved from a GeForce 680 to the internal graphics of my i7 13700.
    This was mainly due to limitations of the Nvidia drivers (eg. KiCad does not show crosshair with Nvidia because of OpenGL quirks… this is a known limitation under linux). Now, occasionally, one of my 2 screens get disabled in KDE after wake-up.

The one giving me troubles is connected via an HDMI/DVI (monitor)=>DP (PC) converter. I tested 3 different ones (2 HDMI/DP and 1 DVI/DP), and it’s always pretty sporadic.

  1. The software tool (pamac?) gives me reguarly the following error: “Remote peer disconnected” and after a minute, it opens nicely. This is kind of reproduciple… start and close the tool 3 or 4 times, and I get this problem

Tested with stable and testing branch and LTS, the newest stable and experimental kernels over the last month or so.

Any ideas?

Is this a 3D Shooter or why crosshair? :slight_smile:

Why DVI? Is this a older high refresh Monitor?

Switch between X11/Wayland in SDDM.

Did you changed your mirrors to your country under Properties?

And did you also Refresh Databases after it?

Yes.
pacman works and everything updates with it.

pamac, however, “occasionally” is different… 4 starts, 1 “crash”.
I switched to testing due to these misbehaviors.

Btw: Kwin also seems to crash occasionally… ie the task bar occasionally disappears and returns to life after a few seconds. But this is “only” once a week… the other stuff happens basically daily.

CAD for electrical stuff… is a official package.

The new pc offers 1 DP and 1 HDMI.
Both monitors are a little dated had have DVI and HDMI.
So I need to convert one of them.

The converters were stolen from running dated i3 machines running pretty dated manjaro (maybe 2year old manjaro). So they are known to work.

Wayland seems to have issues with zoom…at least 2 or 3 weeks ago… but IIRC, I switcht already one from X11 to wayland and back to X11 without impact.

You still missed that…

Do you perhaps use anything other than the Breeze theme? A lot of problems occur with different screen things when I use Breath, but not with Breeze (I would prefer to also use Gnome’s icon set, but alas, not possible in Plasma 6, so far at least).

Also, try setting the task bar to not floating. Seems to be rather buggy that thing. As you say, crashes once a week, or something, when I use floating. Non floating seems to be working a little better, but no guarantees. It may crash anyway. 8)

Just in case you haven’t found the setting, or for others who read this and don’t know: right-click on Taskbar > Enter Edit Mode > Style “button” > Move the slider over to the left. It doesn’t look as good, but I’d choose that over crashes.

If translations would work… in german translation, this option reads “floating”.

Anyways…something’s broken. I have 2 machines, one with an old setup that’s fine and a new one that is missbehaving.

The only differences I can see are

  • 2 year old config vs new config (both machines run up-to-date manjaro=
  • troubles with “new” hardware (intel seems to care about their drivers)
  • ram (old machine has 64GB, new one will get 64GB in Q3… so maybe some race condition due to swapping???

Did you disabled Fast Boot in your Bios?

This Intel CPU had recently bad media, because its heavily overclocked and the powerdraw is dangerous for your CPU with certain Motherboards.

You could manually adjust this settings in Bios or download a new bios which fixed the powerdraw issue from your CPU.

The big downside, some Bios updates are still in Beta and you lose your Warranty. I saw recently a Gigabyte Motherboard Bios which pretends to fix it, while it makes it even worse.

Simple question.

If you create a new User account in Manjaro, do you experience the same issue, or does it seem to magically go away?

Well, I thought “tested with stable and testing” implied that switching worked, but the problem remained…

Need to check this… ATM a non-interruptible task runs for the next hours.

Well, if that happens, it’ll will be a warranty case for Dell… Mfgs only learn by loosing money on repairs. But my PSU does not even have the power to reach the PL2 limit - I guess I’m fine.

Well that’s not as easy to test as I would like… this is my business-workstation.

Moving to another user would make me re-replicating several 100gb of data from the storage and re-configuring quite some stuff to make my business logic run from that user.
I tested my “disaster-plan” by switching from the old workstation to the new… so I know, most of this will work is already scripted, but the remainings still some manual work. Giving the current temperatures in my office, I’d love to spend these hours under some tree on a lake with some cold drink…

Any chance that renaming/removing “~/.config” would have a similar impact?
I noticed recently, that after a reboot, both monitors are working until I log in. When kwin (I’m running KDE) starts, the second monitor gets disabled.

You may have misunderstood.

The purpose of creating a new account was to see whether the condition exists in a fresh environment; if it did not, then that would infer the issue was related to your existing (user) configuration. The suggestion was not to move to another account.

Renaming ~/.config might be a bit drastic; but temporarily renaming directories beneath ~/.config that may contain settings you suspect might be contributing, is a reasonable approach. Whether this might actually produce results, I can’t say.

Well, all started with a fresh install… but fair enough, it would be a worthwile test if nothing helps.
However, I work on this machine… so not moving everything means no testing.
The issue is not permanent but sporadic…

My bet is on some kind of race-condition between the software and the DP-to-something adapters.

Fast-Boot was disabled already, but the Dell bios allows for a delayed boot process.

I set this delay to 5s and so far, both monitors got detected on every wakeup.
However, this misbehavior shows once almost every day… sometimes, I get 2-3 days without issue…

Oh, and the problem with the update-tool got more annoying with the last update.
Now every other start of the program, it crashes. Reported error: Remote peer disconnected

I don’t know if this will make a difference for your issues with pamac, but it appears that you have a custom mirror pool, possibly from running something like pacman-mirrors --country Austria. With only 2 servers in Austria, this may be a little limiting, and you may have better luck with a custom mirror pool from pacman-mirrors --continent.

With more mirrors, pamac seems stable… so how / where to file a bugreport.
I guess this should not makepamac crashing all the time, right?

Anyhow, disabled monitor after sleep is back… and another new symptom:
Half of the screen does not get the “background”.
After the monitor got dark, the background stayed black and no right-click popup.

Adding to the annoyance, my Jabra speaker randomly stops to playback audio.
I already updated the firmware on the speakers, but still at some point, audio just stops while the microphone still works.

Again, this worked on an older Manjaro installation…

seems libssl is the problem.

For the audio-problem… it seems that pipewire is the problem… IIRC, the older setup used PulseAudio…

I will not condemn or condone the use of pamac’s AUR functionlity - but fact is that the Pamac GUI fairly often creates issues when AUR access is enabled.

Please disable AUR in the pamac settings.

You can do this from terminal by editing /etc/pamac.conf

What’s good about this is that it prevents automatic search/install, but you can still do it manually with the -a option :smiley:
