Some Images Missing in Gnome Icons

I use XFCE with Gnome symbols (or what they are called) and when configuring the action buttons for the task bar in the bottom right corner I can't see all images.

[verminator@runlikehell gnome]$ pwd
[verminator@runlikehell gnome]$ find -name "system-*" -type f | grep actions | sort
[verminator@runlikehell gnome]$

When selecting the options in that configuration dialogue, I only see pictures for

  • Log out
  • Switch user
  • Lock screen
  • Shut down
  • Hibernate (though, I don't know if that's the correct icon)

I don't know if these are represented in the find above. Can somebody please confirm that some icons are missing here? How do I get the others back?

Am I really the only one with this problem? I have this on two PCs.

I've seen two updates of the xfce4-panel, but they didn't fix it.

I really wish anyone could post something here...

List for "system" is the same here

But I am not sure if I understand the question.
I see the "magnifying glass" for Application Finder.

It is not the right one system-search

Uhm, no. I'm talking about the system actions:

The icon for "Shut down" is there, but "Restart" is missing.

Stimmt. Habe hier i3wm über Xfce daher fehlt mir das komplett aber in meiner Aufstellung sind auch keine restart png's vorhanden wie bei dir.

Eventuell solltest du das in die newbie Ecke schieben?

oh man

I'll say. I have here i3wm about Xfce so I miss that completely but in my line-up there are also no restart png's like yours.

Maybe you should put this in the newbie corner?

OK, thread moved.

Your issue has nothing to do with the xfce4-panel, it's related to the icon theme itself.
It seems that the gnome-icon-theme is indeed missing the "suspend" icon in the directory /usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/actions/.

To deal with this issue you can copy an existing icon to the mentioned directory - for example the one from the hicolor-icon-theme located in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/xfsm-suspend.png (or any other icon you want as long as you rename it to system-suspend.png).

To copy the mentioned icon run in a terminal window

sudo cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/xfsm-suspend.png /usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/actions/system-suspend.png

then run

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/gnome/

and reload the panel by running

xfce4-panel -r

You might want to check the source code for that plugin.

For example the name for the reboot button.

This shows how the entries are set up.

The "scalable" icon in the action folder is usually preferred.

If you made changes to your theme, don't forget to regenerate the icon-theme.cache.

Well, OK, I appreciate the links to the sources, but I didn't do anything. I set up the icons when I installed Manjaro a few years ago and didn't touch them. Now a lot of images are missing. To me it looks like a mess and somebody randomly removed a bunch of images (hopefully for a reason). The only complete set of symbols in this area seem to be Adwaita and Oxygen (@SGS I don't have hicolor, but I get your point):

$ find /usr/share/icons/ -iwholename "*/16x16/*/system-*.png"

Actually I was hoping that somebody could fix the repository and bring back all the images that were deleted or implement some fallback mechanism (the link shows that somebody thought about a fallback) that would show another image of a different set in case one is missing. And then publish that so that we all see images (not just me  ).

~ >>> ls /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/actions/

Gnome Icons are for Gnome. I think the name is really obvious. This theme fits the needs of Gnome. And the Gnome Devs usually don't care what other Desktop Environments do.

With the recent switch form XFCE 4.12 ( GTK2) to XFCE 4.14 (GTK3) a lot has changed. The icon themes need to change too. But of course only icons themes that target XFCE. Gnome is not one of these.

I do understand that the name of the symbol set is confusing, but that's what's installed:

I didn't install those manually. So which set is conforming to XFCE's standard? The Gnome-ones are the best looking...

BTW, if I click through them none of them show an image for the restart action. The shutdown-images changes, though. So maybe picking another set doesn't solve my problem...

The "Gome" icon theme is actually only installed because it is a dependency of Audacious.

The default Manjaro XFCE 18.1 uses the Papirus Icons ( papirus-icon-theme and papirus-maia-icon-theme )

I don't know if there is "the default XFCE" Icon theme. Simply use the one that works for you best.

OK, now I'm all confused.

So I installed papirus-maia-icon-theme and none of the additional symbol sets showed that missing icon. So I unchecked and checked the reboot-action in the "Aktionsknöpfe"-dialogue above and suddenly there was an image!? So I clicked through all symbol sets and all of them showed an image for the reboot-action!!!

Then I uninstalled papirus-maia-icon-theme, picked the GNOME set again and it still showed an image......

Seriously, before I created this thread I went through all actions, checked them, unchecked them, and it never showed an image for ones I showed in my OP.

Well, anyway, I don't know what it really fixed now (maybe actually the xfce4-panel-updates did that), but it's working...

OK, hold it. All wrong.

I clicked the first checkbox in the "Aktionsknöpfe"-dialogue to change the orientation of the buttons (they should be displayed on top of each other) and both images were gone... Unchecked the checkbox and I was back to square one where only the shutdown-image shows up...

Do again

If I click on any of the last three sets and uncheck and check the restart-action, the image appears in the style of the respective symbol set. The Oxygen-sets have one and the Vertex-Maria has one. If I click on the GNOME-set the image is rather monotonic, but it's there and looks correct:

However, if I uncheck and check the restart-action now, the image is gone again!

So if I should install the papirus-maia-icon-theme again I'd have to pick one image set from them, I guess. I mean that does make sense. However, those images don't look that great.

It would be interesting where that restart-icon suddenly comes from and why it doesn't stay there.

And in other news: changing the orientation of the buttons doesn't work anywhere. It only shows the image of the first checked action in the regular size. So that's definitely broken.

Every time you set a new icon theme you have to reload the panel in order to see the new icons "in action".

xfce4-panel -r

Sometimes you even have to logout/login to see the new icons.

Did you try what I mentioned in my previous post?
On my system the only icon that was missing from the action buttons of the gnome-icon-theme was the "suspend" icon.
Can you please describe which icons are missing from your panel and what the height (or row size) of your panel is?
On your first post you're mentioning the icons you are seeing, please describe the icons you are not seeing in the panel.

OK, doing that also removes the monotonic icon. So that's just a temporary visual thing :frowning:

TBH, I don't want to go down that road as I'd do stuff that's not in the repository. And what I definitely don't want is to redo that with every update, even if it just concerns an update of the theme or panel. I know myself, that would be annoying.

Height is 34 pixels. I can set it to 100 pixels and restart the panel and they still don't appear.

I guess a picture says more than a thousand words:

I don't know what the English names are, it's all guesses:

  • the first Hibernate (Ruhezustand)
  • Stand-by (Bereitschaft)
  • restart (Neustarten)
  • the second Hibernate (Ruhezustand; the right most icon) doesn't look right
