Stuck at boot after gdm starts

Hello everyone,
I’d like some help troubleshooting a weird issue I’m having.

The problem
At startup, after grup menu, when using kernel 5.10 or 5.11, booting stops after gdm service starts, and a grey screen with a blinking horizontal cursor shows up (as can happen when gdm is about to start) but stops there.

This does not happen using LTS kernel 5.4, which is a good thing.
Also, when the bug occurs, I can still open a tty.

What happened just before
I updated my system via the command line using sudo pacman -Syu. Rebooted for unrelated reasons, then the bug happened.

:+1: Welcome back to the forum! :+1:

  1. Just a reminder as you’ve been away for a while:
    How to provide good information
so please post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

:+1:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, … you have without typing it every time

First of all, thanks for the help.

I’ve restarted with kernel 5.11, and by looking at the logs that I dumped I see Nvidia kernel module errors :
$ cat journal-dump.txt | grep gdm | less

Where do I go from there ?

How did you install the nVidia driver???

Well I followed the wiki’s method :
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Configure_Graphics_Cards

$ mhwd -l --pci
$ sudo mhwd -i pci [name of driver]

  1. That’s good, sorry for asking. :man_shrugging:
  2. Please install both 5.4 and 5.10 LTS (Long Time Support) and see which one of the two troubles you least.

If the above doesn’t make sense yto you, please shout out!

:+1:

Huh that’s weird, seems like I can’t do this because of dependencies conflicting…
I’m using manjaro-settings-manager and I can’t install 5.10 for some reason (I swear I had 5.4 and 5.10 side by side :face_with_raised_eyebrow:) after I uninstalled 5.10 to reinstall it just to be sure.

The following packages will be installed:
linux510
linux510-headers
linux510-virtualbox-host-modules
linux510-nvidia

  • Print this page so you have it as a reference while in TTY2

  • Log off

  • Switch to TTY2 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2

  • Log in there

  • Execute:

    mhwd --listinstalled
    mhwd --remove pci EverythingThatCameUpAboveOnePerLine
    sudo mhwd-kernel --install linux54
    sudo mhwd-kernel --install linux510
    sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia

  • to ensure grub is showing, execute:

    sudo nano --backup /etc/default/grub

  • Change (or add?) the following 3 lines:

    GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
    #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
    #GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden

(3 or higher is fine, add the # before the lines above if those lines are present)

  • Ctrl+X Y Enter to save if there is anything to save

  • If you did save, execute:

    sudo update-grub

  • Reboot

  • Go to grub’s Advanced options

  • Choose these kernels one by one and try them out one by one and see if that helps.

:+1:

It worked !

  • 5.4 OK
  • 5.10 OK
  • 5.11 OK

You rock ! Reinstalling kernels and video driver did the trick
(I believe only the video driver would have been fine, but that’s just a supposition)

This community definitely doesn’t get enough recognition
