[Solved] QCA9377 (ath10k) wireless not working

Hello, :slightly_smiling_face:
I’m super newbie on Linux, but I’ve always used Windows, since Win95, then WinXP, WinVista and Win7. I’ve always solved my problems, thanks to google and forums, but now I’m stuck in this problem.

I’ve just installed Manjaro 17.1.10 on laptop (single partition, without Win).

I have a Lenovo V110 laptop with Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 card.
I’ve a desktop (Win7) pc too, connected with an ethernet cable. The Pc’s router isn’t wifi, so to connect the laptop I would use the Access Point Atlantis NetFly AP4 Wireless that I use to connect my Kindle to the net with success.

On Manjaro install, no wirless or connection.
When I tried to use wireless, I could connect with my AP (I can see the laptop in the AP’s Control Panel), but no internet.
I read many problems on Atheros chips, so I tried to use kvalo’s firmware.

Anyway, I tried to use WLAN.FT.1.0/firmware-5.bin and then the two WLAN.2.1/firmware-6.bin.

sudo cp -r ath10k-firmware/QCA9377 /lib/firmware/ath10k/
sudo cp /ath10k/QCA9377/hw1.0/firmware-5.bin_WLAN.TF.1.0-00002-QCATFSWPZ-5 /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA9377/hw1.0/firmware-(5 or 6).bin

I tried to:

  1. Use new firmware-5.bin

With all these trials I used board(s).bin new and old.

  1. Upgrade Manjaro with Pacman to the last packages (2 hours of patience)!

  2. Change Access Point’s parameters: Channel Width from 40 to 20 Mhz; Encryption from WPA2 Mixed to WPA2; I disable TPK, now there’s only AES. Remember: this AP works well with kindle. I don’t have others wifi product to test.

  3. I tried the untested firmware and firmware from CNSS.TF folder in the kvalo repository, even if I don’t know them.

No wifi yet. I don’t want to install Windows 7 on the laptop. But I can’t lost days on this problem, you know.

I tried to install backports, but I’ve been stopped because I don’t have linux headers, or something similar: I read someone says that it isn’t a goode choice, someone solved the problem with them. Maybe have I to do it?

I post here some (I hope) relevant outputs:

What a great post. I haven’t seen a WiFi help request so perfectly detailed ever. Props to you for going the extra mile for a well structured help request.

Now to the sad part. Many on the forum have spent a lot of time trying to get this card working on Linux of late. Nothing has seemed to work with this card recently. I have thrown countless fixes at the many help requests for this card and nothing has worked. If you are bound and determined to try and get this card working search the forum and you will find many reported fixes.

You may just get lucky and find a fix that actually works out of the many purported fixes. Unfortunately, I think you will spend much time with no return for your efforts. I think you would be far better off to save all the effort and buy a USB WiFI adapter with good USB support out of the box.

I wish I could help you, but frankly I’ve just given up on trying to get that card working. Best of luck, wish I had better news.

(edit)

As of kernel 4.19 this adapter is now working properly with the version 6 firmware again.

Sad news, I see.
The only thing I don’t try is to install backports, but I think I’ll have others tons of errors :yum:
This laptop have only two usb ports and one is for the mouse (I hate using touchpad). But I’m thinking there is the only solution, at the moment.

What a pity, anyway. Do you think there is any hope to solve the problem in the future? I mean, perhaps someone will be able to do a good firmware for this adapter…

The posts you see about back ports will usually all be ubuntu posts. I have seen a few people on the Arch forums attempt that, but I don’t recall seeing any success with it.

I think at some point kernel updates and firmware upgrades will fix it, but who knows how long that will be. It could be fixed next week or it could take 3 years. Who can predict these things.

Ok, you are right. I’ll wait some day for some unexpected solution, but I’m pessimist.

You could be one of the lucky ones that actually gets this card working if you try. Its just a matter of how much time and effort do you want to put into something with a small chance of success.

I can tell from your initial post that you are a fairly proficient Linux user. I think you would have a better chance than most to get your card working. You are the first user I’ve seen who attempted the firmware upgrades on your own. I’ve walked people through that , but have given up on that route because of a total lack of success. You seem to have a very good grip on the subject. If anyone can crack this nut I think you can.

Hmmm… my free time is not much, this is the problem. Maybe very calmly … we’ll see.
And thanks for your compliments and encouragement. It’s always nice to get them!
What has always made me desist from leave windows is inevitably having to waste time learning a new world, but I know that I did, I would be a very happy linuxian.
Also the new versions of Windows are becoming more and more problematic. Perhaps is the right time.

It is definitely the right time for you to migrate to Linux. You have the temperament for it and you are way ahead of the average users skill level that first tries to make the switch. You will never look back, there is no better time than now. The software choices in the aur are great, and in no time you will be sorry you wasted so long on Windows.

Ultimely, I was successful! :hugs:
It was my Access Point’s fault, or more precisely, it was my fault because DHCP was enable.
Anyway, after I installed Manjaro, the Network couldn’t work in any case (Eth and wifi).

So, let’s take this step-by-step.
At first, when I installed Manjaro (and during it), network didn’t work, neither the Ethernet, nor the Wi-Fi. So, for ath10k, in Manjaro, a problem exists, at least for me not being an expert.

Then, I tried to download the last ath10k drivers from kvalo github site. I tried many other solutions, but anything was good. At the end, I tried to install backports, and just once it worked. But when I disconnected, I wasn’t able to connect anymore. Note that the power signal was poor (only one bar) and an enormous ping.

Then, I tried a Kubuntu live demo. With original driver, no Internet. With kvalo’s firmware (firmware-5.bin) I connected twice (after many reboot, maybe 10-15?).
At the end, exhausted, I threw in the towel. :no_entry:
I uninstall backports, update Manjaro again, and I follow the tbg’s advice. Since I’ve read many people were successful on Realtek 8187L, I bought ALFA Network AWUS036H.

At the first time, booom, Internet was ok! All happy, I surfed the web for an hour. But when I reboot, no Internet again!
In the last, I noted the ip adress wasn’t the same as the previous connection.
On Internet, I looked for possible Access Point problems and in a forum I read to disable DHCP.
(Why on earth, if with the wizard I configure it to serve as an Access Point, it doesn’t disable Dhcp itself???)

So, as it is, Manjaro doesn’t work with my Qualcomm Wi-Fi card. And neither works the Ethernet too.
If I install the new kvalo’s drives, they works both. But the Qualcomm Ath10k is a poor card, so I’m happy I bought the Alfa Network card, although I’ve lost a usb port (there are only two ports, :disappointed_relieved:).

I see you were online today, so I Just thought I’d give you a heads up. Your wired connection is not set up properly. I noticed it in your inxi output that you are only half duplex speed.

It should be:

speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full

If you only use your new wireless USB adapter then no big deal. If you do use the wired connection, you may want to change your auto negotiation settings for your wired connection in NM.

Done! Thanks tbg.
I had the “Allow auto-negotiation” disable and the speed was set to Half.
