[Solved] Manjaro Xfce post-installation problem: black screen on reboot

https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4656/~/list-of-fermi-series-geforce-gpus

yor gpu is a fermi, so you have to go with nvidia 390 series.

You’re totally right. I should have mentioned it.

I’ve already tried it several times.

Ok. I’ll try with this setting then.

Ok. Thanks.

I followed the wiki, but again no luck. This is what I did:

In the live media’s terminal I wrote:

lsblk -f (result: I have two partitions: sda1 e swap)
I assume the GRUB loader is on sda1

sudo mhwd-chroot

This comand opens a second terminal . Here I wrote:

sudo pacman -S mtools os-prober
grub-install /dev/sda
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
update-grub

Is this correct?

It sounds fine. Have you not rebooted yet?

(mtools is not normaly needed AFAIK, but no harm to have it)

I rebooted but the problem is still there.

Assuming you have your BIOS and installations in DOS-Legacy mode (not UEFI), you may try booting to TTY editing Grub menu option as explained here

Then try startx to see if it starts DE (xfce4?).
Then check your previous boot logs

journalctl -b -1 -p 3
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Install grub again but check your actual drive’s name

inxi -puo

Can you switch to a text console with e.g. CTRL-ALT-F2? If so, can you log in with your username and password?

Yes, I can. In live media. I logged in with:

usr: manjaro
psw: manjaro

But I don’t know how to exit the terminal.

The question aims to the installation, not live media.
To exit, better reboot

reboot

This may sound like a silly question but is your flash setup for bios and not UEFI ? I have had that cause issues similar to what you are facing.

I used Rufus (and now YUMI) and I think it supports both Legacy and UEFI setups. I’m not sure about YUMI.

It is not a proposed method. Use either Etcher or Rufus in DD mode.
Could you boot to TTY as I suggested?

Yes and the “cat” comand gave me a pretty lenghty log… Should I post it anyway?

I have also tried to reinstall GRUB but rebooting wasn’t successful.

How can we know the problem? Post all outputs I asked, using proper wrapping (as described in the tutorial)

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Did you run startx from TTY ?

Yes, I did.

And? (it starts getting funny!.. )
Did you get into your XFCE session or did you get some error?
And before you answer Yes or No again… what was the error exactly?

Is it possible that the Grub menu you get on boot is from

??
If so, this maybe the problem. I want to believe that you posted the full output of the partitions command. So you don’t have any other partition with another distro.
You should be sure that GRUB is from Manjaro.

I didn’t encounter any errors. I got into XFCE easily. But after rebooting the system the problem it’s still there.

No, it’s the Manjaro loader. But installing Manjaro and erasing the entire HD shouldn’t erase also the GRUB loader?

That is something important that should have been reported first, I guess… :heart_eyes_cat:
So your problem seems to be LightDM is not starting properly.
Could you, please, check

SYSTEMD_LESS=FRXMK systemctl status lightdm
SYSTEMD_LESS=FRXMK journalctl -b -g lightdm
sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/*.log

The 3nd command probably contains more than one file. Check with sudo ls /var/log/lightdm
Please post them separate if possible.
