I’ve got a small question regarding my second monitor in i3wm. From time to time I have to change the name of my second monitor. Running “xrandr” confirms the monitor’s name has been changed.
How do I make a certain monitor’ name “fixed”. Is this possible? How does this mechanism work?
Example 1:
exec xrandr --output HDMI-A-1-1 --auto --left-of eDP-1
Example 2:
exec xrandr --output HDMI-1-2 --auto --left-of eDP-1

AFAIK it’ll only change if it has been connected to a different port. So, check that.

In more than a year, mine’s not changed:
$ xrandr

I’ve got the same setup throughout the i3wm installation with only one hdmi port present on my laptop. My setup works fine for about a month or so but it is very irregular.
The only 2 things I can imagine are: Sometimes I work without the extra monitor and sometimes I update my system.
Well, then I recommend not updating your system with the extra monitor disconnected.
Little update,
I needed to switch again to the other monitor’s name today. There was no update, only a full working day without this second monitor attached to the HDMI port.
