[SOLVED] 5.10 doesn't boot, 5.9 Failed to start load kernel module - 2012-12-30 Update

Just a newbie here,

I was running on 5.9 and because of a notification I installed 5.10.

Now, 5.10 doesn’t boot.
I have not uninstalled 5.9 so when I try to boot from there it says,

[FAILED] Failed to start load Kernel Modules.
[FAILED] Failed to mount /boot/efi.
[DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File Systems

just some extra information:
I dualboot windows 10.
I also have a live boot from a USB.

Tried to chroot from the live boot and this is the output:

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ su
[manjaro manjaro]# manjaro-chroot -a
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdc1. Check your device.map.

sda is where my manjaro is.
sdb2 is just extra space to use in manjaro.
sdb itself has Windows 10.

Edit:i didn’t know about tty when I finished writing this but know with some researching.

what should I do next?

You have to enter 1 at this point.

By any chance you used Nvidia drivers? What is the output of hwinfo --gfx You can also try to boot 21.0-pre1, which includes our last updates already.

Oh, didn’t know that. thanks.

doing chroot again, the output is:

[manjaro@manjaro ~]$ su
[manjaro manjaro]# manjaro-chroot -a
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdc1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdc1. Check your device.map.

yes i do use nvidia drivers.
linux59-nvidia-450xx 450.80.02-10 is the driver

here’s the output for hwinfo --gfx from tty2:

also how do you boot (install/update?) into 21.0-pre1?

I assume you can still login to your TTY on your install. As we have massive issues with updating Nvidia drivers I did another try:

So do this:

  • start your PC with your broken installation
  • You will fail to have a graphical session
  • login to your TTY: ctrl + alt + f2
  • login as user or root
  • update your system again to get latest manjaro-system package from today
  • check if nvidia drivers got installed.

If not, do the following:

sudo pacman -Rdd $(pacman -Qq | grep 450xx) --noconfirm
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0302
sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0380
1 Like

I did

Sudo pacman -Syu
And
Sudo pacman -Syyu

It says there’s nothing to do.

I also tried
Sudo pacman -S manjaro-system
Output is:
warning: manjaro-system-20201231-7 is up to date
– reinstalling

I’m currently doing the 2nd option.
Edit:
Output for sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0302 is:
Warning: no device of class 0302 found!

Output for sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0380 is:
Skipping already installed config for ‘video-linux’ for device: 0000:00:02.0 (0380:8086:5912) Display controller Intel Corporation HD Graphics 630

Driver has been installed, and I’m back to my pc.

Thanks!
