Software Problems after Update

Hello together,

After the last major update, the Vivaldi browser, Brave browser, and Chrome browser no longer start. Even reinstalling them did not help. Only Firefox still works. The same applies to Netflix, DisneyPlus, and Notepadqq.
Current system:
KDE Plasma version: 6.5.3
KDE Frameworks version: 6.20.0
Qt version: 6.10.1
Kernel version: 6.12.61-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics platform: Wayland
Graphics processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
Graphics driver: nvidia

Thanks for help.

Greetings from Germany,
Marc

Please provide system information as described (below). I’m sure someone will help when they are able.

Regards.

What follows is from a standard template.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Required Reading
Highly Recommended

Work with us, not against us

It is important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem. Please also be prepared to provide output from commands if/when asked.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions is counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – and your clear, concise and accurate input is often relied upon in order to help you.

Please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
If running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

This is a local issue - try removing ~/.cache folder

Reinstalling the browsers won’t help - it is a local settings issue

Chrome, Netflix, DisneyPlus and Notepadqq is not in the repo - therefore unsupported.

Try creating a new new user/password combo - logout and login with the new user - check if the issue persist with the browsers from the repo (vivaldi and brave).

@linux-aarhus
Thank you for your help. I deleted the ~/.cache folder, but unfortunately Vivaldi and Brave still won’t start. Even with a new user, the programs won’t open.
Could it be due to the Nvidia graphics card? I have another Lenovo laptop running the same system. Everything still works fine on it after the update. However, it has an AMD Radeon graphics chip.

Impossible to speculate without more useful detail.

Please provide the previously requested system information: :eyes:

I am not well-versed with Nvidia - until a recent offer I couldn’t refuse - I have not used Nvidia some years - all AMD.

Perhaps - Nvidia can be flaky - I saw somewhere the 16xx should use Nvidia 575xx driver.

I also saw another member which had resorting to the opensource nouveau driver.

That indeed point towards Nvidia - but it is impossible to say.

You could also try running brave or vivaldi (or any of the problematic apps) from a terminal to see if any error messages appear. If they do, copy and paste them into a reply in this topic.

That, along with the output of inxi -zv8, may help with identifying the cause of the issue.

Which nvidia driver are you using?

On my system I have the current nvidia-open 580.105.8, and I typing this comment using Vivaldi, so I don’t think it’s related to this version of the driver.

These applications are sourced via the AUR, and as such are not officially supported on Manjaro or Arch Linux.

All that really can be suggested is to remove them completely and then build them again – note this is not reinstalling, but removing and building them again via the AUR:

1. Uninstall the applications:

sudo pacman -Rns brave disneyplus google-chrome netflix notepadqq

2. Build the applications again individually via the AUR:

pamac build brave
pamac build disneyplus
pamac build google-chrome
pamac build netflix
pamac build notepadqq

Other than that, I suggest reading:

This is definitely GPU related.

Try disabling hardware rendering in vivaldi

Open vivaldi settings CtrlF12

In the search box enter hardware - uncheck Use Hardware Acceleration when Available - close vivaldi and reopen.

I suggest you try replacing the nvidia drivers with the opensource nouveau driver.

sudo mhwd-kernel -i pci video-linux
sudo mhwd-kernel -r pci video-nvidia

Eventually try the earlier driver

sudo mhwd-kernel -i pci video-nvidia-570xx

@linux-aarhus
Thank you very much! Switching to the video-linux driver did the trick. Everything is running as usual again.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Best regards

That’s interesting. See if Firefox works. It’s not chromium based, but the ones you’ve listed are. Perhaps some dependency common to chromium browsers did not properly install on your PC.

Tony.
