Slow hotspot speed after installation

when i turn on my hotspot, and connect my phone to it, the maximum speed i get is around 100KBps even though my internet is good enough to give around 2.5 MBps

This piece of … erm… hardware has 2 known problems… Please provide the output of:

cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8723be.conf

[abhra@abhra ~]$ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
3817
[abhra@ ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8723be.conf
cat: /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8723be.conf: No such file or directory

That’s good (>1000)

That’s bad. Try this:

echo "options rtl8723be swenc=1 fwlps=0 ips=0 ant_sel=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

Then reboot and try again.

The first option does this:

parm: swenc:using hardware crypto (default 0 [hardware]) (bool)
parm: ips:using no link power save (default 1 is open) (bool)
parm: fwlps:using linked fw control power save (default 1 is open) (bool)
parm: ant_sel:Set to 1 or 2 to force antenna number (default 0) (int)

The second option tells NetworkManager to not use power saving on top of the module itself.

:innocent:

thanks a lot but the second command is having issues

[abhra~]$ echo “options rtl8723be swenc=1 fwlps=0 ips=0 ant_sel=1” | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
options rtl8723be swenc=1 fwlps=0 ips=0 ant_sel=1
[abhra@ab ~]$ sudo sed -i ‘s/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/’ /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
sed: can’t read /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf: No such file or directory

If you’re not using NetWorkManager (which this looks like) you should ignore that.

Any improvements after a reboot???

:innocent:

sorry , no imrovement after reboot .
also the directory ‘/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/’ looks empty

Try the following then:

sudo nano --backup /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

copy-paste this in there:

wifi.powersave = 2

and hit Ctrl+X Enter to save that

then restart NM or reboot.

Then feed back again.

well i tried that but during reboot it says ‘failed to start network manager’ and also ran into some issues with network as expected, so had to revert the changes and i deleted it
