Should I wait for the new stable ISO to reinstall?

Hello there! I’ve been trying xfs for a while and now I want to move to BTRFS. I’ve seen tho that with the new Manjaro 25 release there will be some movement around BTRFS making it main choice… I think being Manjaro rolling there should not be much difference, but I ask you: should I wait for the new iso to release or it doesn’t change anything if I just reinstall now?

Thank you!!!

Welcome to the forum! :vulcan_salute:

Well, it is important to note here that btrfs will become the default filesystem when Manjaro 25 Zetar comes out, but this does not prevent anyone from choosing a custom partitioning layout with one’s own filesystem preferences.

The custom partitioning option is always there, even though most people apparently choose not to use it.

Well, if you reinstall now, then given the age of the current official install media, there will be many updates waiting right after installation.

In theory, everything should go well — or at least, if you heed the advice given in the first two posts of all of the Stable Updates threads since the release of those ISOs — but there might still be gotchas.

What you could do, on the other hand, is install from one of the pre-release Zetar ISOs that are currently being tested. The software on there will already be fairly up-to-date — meaning that there will be fewer updates waiting — but they are still pre-release ISOs because the content of the ISOs is still up for revision, i.e. it may yet be decided to add certain packages to the ISO or drop others from it.

Nevertheless, if you install from either of these pre-release ISOs and you run a full system update — preferably by way of pacman in a tty environment — then you should be on par with everyone else.

You can find the pre-release ISOs below…

XFCE 4.20

Plasma 6.3

Gnome 48

The release review was last rebuilt at 2025-03-31T22:00:00Z - no not a prank

You can get the ISO by using the package manjaro-get-iso.

After syncing the package run

get-iso <edition> -r

Or if you would like the full ISO

get-iso <edition> -r -f

/EDIT:
The get-iso can be told to save the image directly at any mounted and writable location - including USB device prepared with ventoy.

Assuming the device has been mounted using a file manager - default ventoy partition is named Ventoy thus the command would look like

get-iso <edition> --review --full --out-dir /run/media/$USER/Ventoy

And, of course, we recommend Ventoy for putting the ISO on a USB stick.

If you are already using Manjaro, then ventoy is in the repository. If you are using another distribution and they do not offer it — which would surprise me, but it’s not impossible — then you can get it from here.

Thanks! Is the review ISO following the stable channel for updates? Sorry if the question is silly, I’m new to the whole Manjaro thing

Very helpful. I wasn’t even aware that something like this does exist.
Many thanks!

Yes - They are build using Github CI - if I remember correct - on a weekly base and follow stable branch.

@magnogna

And, here is a guide to creating a Ventoy USB.
(Make sure to set the right options before creating it.)
