What I want to do:
→ What I want is to create a 5Ghz WIFI connection and secure it with a password and share the connection with anyone and if you have the password you can connect and use the connection.
→ I have a Manjaro KDE Desktop that gets the internet from a ethernet cable.
→ I want to share that internet through a WIFI adapter plugged in a USB3 port.
→ The WIFI adapter can handle 2.4 and 5 ghz connections.
→ I have installed the drivers for the Realtek adapter so it can be used as a WIFI adapter.
→ I have configured the connection through the WIFI & Networking UI from the Manjaro Settings with the following configuration:
General Configuration tab
- Connect automatically with priority (unchecked)
- All users may connect to this network (checked)
- Automatically connect to VPN (unchecked)
- Firewall zone (empty)
- Metered (no)
WI-FI tab
- SSID : NIC-2024-5Ghz
- Mode : Access Point
- Band : A(5 Ghz)
- Channel : 48 (5.240 MHz)
- Restrict to device : wlp0s20u9
- Cloned MAC address : :::::
- MTU : (empty)
- Visibility : Hidden network (unchecked)
WI-FI Security tab
- Security : WPA/WPA2 Personal
- Password : ****************
Store password for all users (not encrypted)
IPv4 tab
- Method: Shared to other computers
- DNS Servers: (empty)
- Search Domains: (empty)
- DHCP Client ID: (empty)
- IPv4 is required for this connection (unchecked)
IPv6 tab
- Method: Automatic
- Other DNS Servers: (empty)
- Search Domains: (empty)
- Privacy: Default
- IPv6 is required for this connection (unchecked)
Problem:
→ If the Band at WI-FI tab is set to 2.4 Ghz and i set the WPA/WPA2 Personal security password , i can create the connection , everyone can see the connection and it asks for the password like it should.
→ If the band at WI-FI tab is set to 5Ghz (like i want)
- if i set the WPA/WPA2 Personal security password, i can create the connection but nobody can see the connection in their WIFI lists (i also tried all the Channels available, the ones that do allow me to make create the connection (40,44,48…) can’t be seen by anyone, and the rest of the channels don’t allow me to create the connection at all giving me an error “Authorization supplicant timed out”)
- if i set the WPA/WPA2 Enterprise with Authentication PWD , i can create the connection , everyone can see the connection in ther WIFI lists but it doesnt ask for any password , it’s basically an unsecured connection
- also tried the other security options including WPA3 and none of them work , either they dont allow me to even try to create a connection or it errors out
Technical:
→ listing the usbs with “lsusb” i get:
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 0bda:c811 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11ac NIC
→ I have installed the “rtl8821cu-dkms-git” driver with the Add/Remove software built into Manjaro
→ checking with “iwconfig” gets me the following:
wlp0s20u9 unassociated Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"
Mode:Managed Frequency=5.24 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Sensitivity:0/0
Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
→ using “sudo dmesg | grep 8821cu” I get:
[ 8.019631] usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8821cu
[ 8.026357] rtl8821cu 3-9:1.0 wlp0s20u9: renamed from wlan0
