I have used Manjaro KDE for many years and it is great. I decided to do a new install on a spare hard drive and a sorted most tweeks apart from text on desktop icons. These have a shadow. making them difficult to read and are too small.
I have searched all the settings and relevant posts for days and am beaten.
What am I missing?
Thanks.

This does appear quite normal to me.
Text shading is quite important, especially if you have slideshow or change wallpapers… though in this example it is fairly extreme because you have a very BRIGHT wallpaper there.
Here you can see that shading works best when the wallpaper is slightly less bright - I would suggest this an easy solution. I’m not happy with ‘honey-lemon’, but the other two are very clear.
Hovering over an icon should also display that text in a very clear tooltip.
This is the same font displayed in Dolphin, if you’re happy with it there then I wouldn’t change it - but I would aim for a wallpaper better suited to the shadow effect.
I don’t believe there is an option to disable the shadow - this might be a topic for https://discuss.kde.org/
It is possible to change the font - you can select a BOLD font (but not ONLY for the desktop).
Personally I have changed my habit, and rarely put more than 2-3 very temporary icons on the desktop, preferring the Dolphin window; but with my wallpaper slideshow it’s very rare for a wallpaper to be so bright as the one you have shown.
Also, any desktop files I don’t wish to delete, I will drag into my Tidy folder - that will open a plasma folder if you click the ‘up’ arrow, and that’s themed nicely.
Spot on good sir, it was the wallpaper. My old setup has a darker one and I was assuming it was a tweek I had done years ago to make the text clearer.
I wonder why Manjaro uses the lighthouse for the default wallpaper on a system download?
Thanks again and for the comprehensive reply.

@cscs spawns a new generation of hackers.
Sadly I could only find the icon Dropshadow, not the text… but actually I think best just to avoid white wallpapers
