Serious iSCSI problems since kernel 7.2

I have serious iSCSI problems since 7.2:
Same with CachyOS, so its not only Manjaro.
Since 7.2.3 i cannot even mount the drive…
Going back to 7.1 works, also the DKMS drivers for Realtek 8127a help a bit…

Kernel 7.1 is no longer supported – has reached EOL – go back to kernel 6.18 (LTS) instead.

How exactly is this post useful for helping to fix the borked 7.2 release?
I know that its not supported anymore, but LTS introduces many other implications like RTL8127A SFP+ isn’t supported in tree…
And without network, the whole iSCSI thing doesn’t make sense.

You can try 7.3 (rc) if you want, alternatively. But running the now unsupported 7.1 won’t fix anything either. It will just disappear automatically on the next update and you will be automatically switched to 7.2 again.

The post was an advisory that kernel 7.1 had reached EOL, and is no longer supported, nothing more, nothing less.

Stating “Going back to 7.1 works” without a qualifying statement to indicate otherwise, suggests that you might have not been aware of the fact.

If this was mentioned from the onset, I would indeed not have bothered.

Same with 7.3RC:

Interestingly, reading works without problems, only writing to the iSCSI extent is borked…
I read about 40 GB (Robocop Rougue City) to my local SSD and tried to write the same after about 30s to an folder on the iSCSI drive.
After 2,5 GB it stopped and went RO…

Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8
Running `inxi` in `chroot`
Providing `inxi` when you cannot access your desktop environment

Also:

You could try switching to Unstable branch to see if the issue still occurs with the newer RC version of linux73. According to Branch compare for Manjaro - linux73, Stable branch currently has v7.3.0rc1-2 in the repos, while Unstable branch is on v7.3.0rc4-2.

To switch to Unstable branch, run the following commands:

sudo pacman-mirrors -a -B unstable && sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyu

To return to Stable branch:

sudo pacman-mirrors -a -B stable && sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyuu

Note: the extra u is required to enable package downgrades when moving from Unstable to Testing or Stable, or from Testing to Stable

Next i’ll try switching the network adapter, testing if its really Realtek related or iSCSI…
I hope i find a suitable adapter…

Found an old Intel X520 Adapter and it is working flawless as expected, no iSCSI or ext4 errors.
So definitely something with r8169 is borked since (including) 7.2.3…

TBH im not into SCSI Topic at all, i didn’t know that this Hardware is still a thing today, most client PC’s count on SATA today or not?

Do you have a PCIe iSCSI Adapter for your HDD’s in your PC or is that onboard related?

I don’t get it, why you not using SSDs/NVMe’s specially for your games? I was using my HDD’s for simple Data Storage or Data/Game Backup Drives, but i haven’t directly playing anything on a HDD anymore since 5 year’s ago.

Are iSCSI Drives doing gaming related something better, compared to SATA?

My mainfocus is always to use NVMe’s (because its the fastest access) for games and install the OS on a normal SSD. The OS doesn’t really need this NVMe Power (besides booting) its a wasted ressource.

I recently found out specially since Helldivers2 release that since a few year’s, games are strangly for HDD’s designed (after SSD’s exist, to still have a compatibility) and required much less space (because HDD’s requires additional space related to packaging/compressing of gamedata) when they are designed mainly for SSD’s.

Which is more and more a thing since 3-4 year’s… that’s why there is sometimes a info at the Steam Storage Page under Game Requirements a SSD hint, when you scroll the page to the bottom.

Here this is the full (HDD vs SSD) explanation from the devs:

iSCSI is still the king when it comes to unload tens of gigs of games. Sometimes even beats the nvme. Of course, not all that shines is gold and there are some caveats.

I think both of you thought of SCSI whereas the OP is talking about iSCSI to attach storage over a network as local devices.

So did I

iSCSI is about sourcing out your storage to the network on block level (whereas SMB and NFS provide storage on file level).
It is not some physical drive or something, just an transportation layer for doing filesystems over the network.

In fact, i have two 10 TB iSCSI extents on my TrueNAS VM in the basement (6x 12 TB SATA drives, a Optane P900 as SLOG and ARC).
This brings me close to line speed (10GBits/s) while having my full collection of games always locally available.
Try this with nowadays SSD pricing… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Precisely!

Thank you both for that explanation, yeah i thought about the old school SCSI drives and i didn’t know there is something like that even possible with iSCSI.

That stuff sounds fancy :star_struck:

The newer variant of SCSI is called SAS. Just as SATA is “Serial ATA”, as the successor to PATA “Parallel ATA” — also commonly called IDE, although that actually means a different thing and applies to SCSI as well — SAS is “Serially-Attached SCSI”, as the successor to regular SCSI, which was also parallel-connected.

iSCSI is primarily used in Storage Area Networks, e.g. as used by mainframes and supercomputers. It’s for using remotely attached storage as if it were locally connected storage — i.e. accessed at the block level, as @libertypo writes.

Correction, it was @Weltherrscher explaining what it is.
I only agreed with it.

it is indeed, if you are willing to have the network and server power and also the electricity bill for it.
