Xfce4 notifications don't behave as before

After a recent update, the blueman-applet connect/disconnet notifications no longer disappear by themselves.

Maybe they were a “toast” before, but now, they are a window that hangs around until I click the X in the top right. And they appear in the middle of my screen. They’re a hassle.

How can I get the previous behaviour back where they would appear more transparently in the top right of my screen, and then fade and disappear after about 5 seconds?

Xfce running here, I can not confirm your problem. Mine fades out fine after 5 seconds (my settings).
Look into xfce4-settings-manager → xfce4-notifyd-config.

Thanks banjo for these pointers. I eventually found that the service has segfaulted.

/usr/lib/xfce4/notifyd/xfce4-notifyd &

and life is good again
