SDcards created TODAY with manjaro-arm-installer are not booting

Hi! For some days I have struggled to solve a problem learning about Kubernetes.

I started with 3 Raspberry Pi: one 3B+ and two 4B. The 3B+ was intended to be the master and the two 4B agents (workers).

I used manjaro-arm-installer to prepare the SDcards. I had problems setting the Kubernetes Dashboard and tried several things, several times. Then I supposed that were something related to Raspberry Pi/ARM and began to try on VMs with Arch Linux. Same problem… Almost giving up I tried with VMs using Ubuntu Server 20.04. Then it worked! But as I prefer Manjaro/Arch I continued to search for the root cause. Finally I found!

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kubernetes#Pods_cannot_communicate_when_using_Flannel_CNI_and_systemd-networkd

Then TODAY I get back to my Raspberry Pi…

With great surprise I found that after prepare the SDcards, as usual, none of them boot up!

The one connected to a monitor showed only the “circle thing motion”. None of them get past to login screen or get an IP address from router. Done again, same results. Then I prepared three other SDcards, new partition table and manjaro-arm-installer again. Now even the “circle thing motion” disapeared.

Maybe some update, from last thursday till today may caused this?

Can you please post the contents of these files on the SD card:

/etc/fstab
/boot/cmdline.txt

Sure, I am repeating the process to copy all messages from console.

Edit your cmdline.txt file and put in 18407cfc-02 for root=PARTUUID.
You also need to put in the btrfs stuff, no idea why it didn’t do it for you. Do you run the installer from a system that has btrfs-progs installed?

rootflags=subvol=@ needs to go in the front of cmdline.txt.

Everything was working perfectly (except my thing with kubernetes) on last thursday, for sure. I repeat exact same steps. On thursday, because I still have no idea what was causing the problem with kubernetes, I tried several times alternating between EXT4 and BTRFS on manjaro-arm-installer.

I am using manjaro-kde-21.1-210809-linux513.iso install on my notebook.

I have another notebook with Manjaro. Will turn it on, not update anything and try manjaro-arm-installer on it to see if generated SDcard works as usual…

Yeah.
@Darksky changed how the kernels do the cmdline.txt lately. That’s what changed.

I asked about the btrfs-progs, because of the errors in your install output:

Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e
Failed to create directory or subvolume "/var": Function not implemented
Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e
Failed to create directory or subvolume "/home": Function not implemented
Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e

Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e

Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e

Failed to create directory or subvolume "/tmp": Function not implemented
Unsupported ioctl: cmd=0x5000940e
Failed to create directory or subvolume "/var/tmp": Function not implemented

On the older notebook, which I does not let update, at least the SDcard boots and keep “circulating”. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

In cmdline.txt add root=PARTUUID=18407cfc-02 rootfstype=btrfs

I do not know about the other variables in your fstab but maybe it will get picked up when booting when it reads fstab.

With just these modifications to cmdline.txt it boots up ok again.

I need to check the new PARTUUID because I used manjaro-arm-installer again (on the older notebook).

I added rootflags=subvol=@ to the begining of the line and added the new PARTUUID after root=PARTUUID=

I still does not fully understand what caused this…

What change result in this situation:

  • change to manajro-arm-installer
  • change to Manjaro KDE 21.1
  • both

None of them.
The change was in linux-rpi4.

:joy:

And as I am too newbie to fix it manually myself, I will wait a new version that goes back to 100% user-friendly manjaro-arm-installer!

Thanks @Strit and @Darksky for your attention, help and work!

Without a doubt Manjaro it’s one of the best distro (if not THE BEST) because of your work and the great community.

The other images have been using PARTUUID= for a while. I had wanted to change to do the same with the pi4 kernels but never did. Then I was testing a pi kernel the other day and it did not boot with what was being used LABEL=. So I asked @Strit for help converting it. It tested ok with just installing the kernel but never was tested using the tools to build an image.

He is now looking to change the tools to make it work. It is just one of those things where one thing changed affects another that we were not aware of.

Thanks for running across this issue.

I believe I have fixed this in Manjaro ARM Installer in fix bug in rpi4 btrfs with the new kernel changes (c8117a00) · Commits · manjaro-arm / applications / manjaro-arm-installer · GitLab, which is included in the new 1.4.6 release.

Also fixed in the Tools with [buildarmimg] fix rpi4 btrfs bug (acacacbd) · Commits · manjaro-arm / applications / manjaro-arm-tools · GitLab.

I already downloaded version v1.4.6 of manjaro-arm-installer and are going to generate three SDcards (for one Raspberry Pi 3B+ and two Raspberry Pi 4B).

Will give feedback as soon as I finish.

Something still wrong, after a long time with the “circle thing” on screen, the Raspberry Pi 3B+ with the first SDcard shows only on screen:

[ 5.033834] usb 1-1.2: device descriptor read/64, error -32

The other two RPI4 doesn´t not respond ping, should be with the same error.

That’s not related to this though. It looks like usb/sd issues.
