Screen turns completely black when moving the mouse or opening a window

Wow, after some heavy googling someone with exactly the same problem I have. I’m late to the party and updated my kernel a few days ago.

At first I was suspecting hardware error but after some troubleshooting I noticed that while using my discrete graphics card (RX 6600) my screen will turn completely black when something is changing, for instance moving the mouse or opening a window. Once image goes static, it comes back on and stays on until the image changes again. Lowering the refresh rate from 144Hz to 120Hz removes the issue completely. Same if I lower the resolution from 2560x1440. I can also use the integrated graphis on my 7600X CPU without any issues at the same refresh rate and resolution.

Now what’s even more interesting is that this problem occurs on kernels 6.6, 6.12 and 6.17. Going back to 6.1 and the problem disappears completely.

Using Wayland over X doesn’t matter either, problem is the same, so I would think it’s something with the AMD drivers in the kernel, no? I’ve no idea to troubleshoot this any further but I’m also happy to stay on 6.1 for the time being as it is supported for quite a while into the future.

Did you find any solution to this problem OP?

Welcome to the Manjaro community @wamp

I have moved your post to a dedicated topic as the topic you originally posted to was nearly a year old. Please refer to the Forum Rules sections 14: Old Threads/“Necro-Bumping” and 27: Thread Hijacking.

As a new or infrequent forum user, you are encouraged to take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

The Update Announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

Regards.

This is very much guessing

If you live in country where your powergrid is 240VAC then the current will be alternating at 50Hz.

144Hz is close to a multiplication of 50Hz which may or may not be causing interference.

As noted this is a guess .. I remember from experience that troubleshooting old-school ITV (coax cabling) includes ensuring the image transmission line is not placed too close to power lines.

Technically this could occur if the cable transporting the signal is next to the cable powering your monitor :man_shrugging:

My country’s grid is at 230VAC and my cabling is mostly a mess. I guess interference could be a cause, but it still doesn’t explain why it only occurs on kernels newer than 6.1 and works fine on 6.1 and earlier

Apologies for the necrobump.

This is my inxi, however from my functioning 6.1 kernel if it matters:

I’m no expert on graphics, but I do wonder if the fact that you are using HDMI for your RX 6600 might be the cause of the issue:

Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 23 [Radeon RX 6600/6600
XT/6600M] vendor: Sapphire driver: amdgpu v: kernel arch: RDNA-2
    code: Navi-2x process: TSMC n7 (7nm) built: 2020-22 pcie: gen: 4
    speed: 16 GT/s lanes: 16 ports: active: HDMI-A-1 empty: DP-1,DP-2,DP-3
    bus-ID: 03:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:73ff class-ID: 0300

I’ve just run a comparison of your 2 graphics cards at gadgetversus.com: AMD Radeon Graphics (Raphael) vs AMD Radeon RX 6600

The Max display resolution for the RX 6600:

7680 × 4320@60Hz (DP),
3840 x 2160@144Hz (DP),
7680 × 4320@60Hz (HDMI),
3840 x 2160@120Hz (HDMI)

So, maybe 144Hz can only be achieved if you use DisplayPort instead of HDMI?

Unfortunately, unless things have changed since the below article was written last year, it looks like HDMI support for AMD cards on Linux will remain limited:

Possibly, but I run 2560x1440@144Hz fine on kernel 6.1, but not on newer kernels.

And I would think that 2560x1440@144Hz requires less bandwidth than 4K@120Hz which is supposed to be supported according to your post?

Hopefully someone here with more knowledge of graphics than I have will be able to provide some suggestions.

In the meantime, is there any reason why you can’t stick with the 6.1 LTS kernel for the time being? It won’t go EOL (end-of-life) until December, 2027, so will be supported for the next 2 years:

No issues with 6.1 so far. And it even has longer support than 6.6 and 6.12 so that’s even better I guess

Thanks for providing that information. I’ll continute running 6.1, but I thought I would shed some light on the issue, since something seem to have happend after 6.1 for me and at least one other person (from the original thread I necrobumped).

Here’s my inxi from 6.12 kernel if it matters:

I made a short demonstration video of the issue since it’s kind of hard to explain exactly what’s going on: youtu.be/B7mdWmPDVm8

Mod edit: Added inxi output here for ease of access, also see note on previous post.

I would think that you might test the possibility, regardless of your resistance to the idea.

Then at least it can be ruled out.

  • Do you have (or can you acquire) a DP to DP cable that would suit the purpose?
  • Do you have a free DP connector on both the GPU (a cursory search failed to reveal much detail) and the monitor?
(It may be best to avoid converter cables).

I do have free DP-connectors on both the graphics card and the screen. I do however not own any DP-cable.

Even if it’s not an actual solution and more of a workaround, I agree it’s a sensible troubleshooting step, and will see if I can borrow a cable from work.

I’ll report back with results.
