Screen lagginess or temp app/screen freeze

I am using
ManjaroLinux 23.0.0 Ultima Thule with
Kernel: 5.15.114-2-MANJARO,
zsh 5.9,
1920x1080,
GNOME 44.1,
Mutter,
CPU: Intel i7-8550U (8) @ 4.000GHz,
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620,
Memory: 4551MiB / 15882MiB,
Wayland

but I have been experiencing intermittent mouse / screen freezing or it acts “laggy” and haven’t been able to figure it out. This is new and wasn’t happening before Wayland. Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot?

I read it again. Does not apply to gnome

Notice the heading says,

Many applications (firefox, thunderbird, etc) slow to start on desktops other than Gnome

Does it work again normally when you restart the gnome-session?

  1. ALT + F2
  2. Type in r or restart
  3. ENTER

It could also be a result of swapping memory to disk, which let it nearly freeze, or the PSR feature of the Intel GPU. Add this to the kernel parameter : i915.enable_psr=0.

Anyway, I am just guessing.

same here on X11, intel GPU, downgraded to Gnome 43

I have the same when I leave USB autosuspend allowed for some devices.

To test and narrow it further down:
Install TLP (and at least for the testing time) disable other tools that meddle with power (powertop). In its USB tab, enable autosuspend, and fiddle test systematically with the ‘deny’ list. lsusb -vt gives you the device tree.

Currently I’m where …
… the difference between freeze and stable is one or more of these denied/allowed: Mouse, Keyboard (external), fingerprint reader, LAN (on an external hub), bluetooth.
… no effect seen with root hubs, external hubs, usb-hdmi adapter.
… external disks are not tested yet.
(All errors reserved  )

I have the same issue, it started a couple weeks ago. It’s sometimes not very often, other times so frequent that it is impossible to work with it.
It tried to disable/uninstall anything that I thought could be the culprit, but didn’t improve anything.
Today, I even reinstalled Manjaro, that made it even worse, at least it feels like it.

The issue persists even when I disable autosuspend for USB devices in TLP :face_exhaling:

It might be an issue with USB, I noticed these messages that seem to correlate with the freezing (might just be confirmation bias though, hard to tell)

I have seen it again despite TLP autosupend deny… :frowning:

My issue got resolved happily. It was OpenWeather extension
