This is a long time question I never asked, perhaps someone understand this.
In any program (libreoffice, inkscape, gimp, etc), when you “Save as”, the window appears pointed somewhere, lets say ~/documents, and the field “name” is highlighted and if you type a name, it goes there. That’s fine.
Now, you don’t want your new file to go in ~/documents , but somewhere else, you select another directory and go to type the name you want for your file.
But no ! The file name is still highlighted, but typing goes in a search field ! Argh, whats that, why would I search for a file when I am saving a new one.
What do I miss, what’s this UX ?
Am I wrong ?
What’s your thoughts ?
That’s xfce right? You just have to click one more time, unlike in windows (no idea about kde and gnome). Drives me crazy sometimes too, but i doubt it can be changed. If you think about it, it is more logical as it is and to keep focus, but i think i have spend too many years with winboze as a kid and old habits die hard.
Maybe I’m just use to it, but seems ok to me. I enter the name I want to save file as, then go to the directory I want and it remembers the name. I’m using Plasma, maybe it’s different in other desktops?
Yes, Plasma.
Of course you can workaround, but is this logic ? What would be the usage of searching a file while saving another ?
OK now I see what you are talking about, that little search box, below the Name box. That pops up because the focus is in the directory. I’m not working around it, it’s just how I do it. File name first, then where do I want to save it. The problem for KDE is how to make both of happy.
Rather than “any” program, it seems like you are listing applications that provide their own file chooser dialog; specifically the dialog built on GTK. For some of those applications, it is possible to force the use of a Qt-based dialog instead.
