Restarting after update...and UEFI

After this update my computer is self-restarting for some reason occasionally ( when screen is locked ) and can’t put finger on it, what’s causing this.

Also getting those messages in journald now every reboot with kernel 6.12.4:

dets 28 12:06:45 Zen kernel: [Hardware Error]: System Fatal error.
dets 28 12:06:45 Zen kernel: [Hardware Error]: CPU:7 (19:21:0) MC5_STATUS[-|UE|MiscV|-|PCC|TCC|SyndV|-|-|-]: 0xbaa0000000010150

or

dets 30 05:27:00 Zen kernel: [Hardware Error]: System Fatal error.
dets 30 05:27:00 Zen kernel: [Hardware Error]: CPU:23 (19:21:0) MC5_STATUS[-|UE|MiscV|-|PCC|TCC|SyndV|-|-|-]: 0xbaa0000000010150

dets 30 05:27:00 Zen kernel: [Hardware Error]: cache level: RESV, tx: INSN, mem-tx: IRD

but when I turned to kernel 6.6, those errors don’t appear. (and I think didn’t come with kernel 6.12.1 either.)

If you can’t put a finger on it, and you have much more info than we do, how are we supposed to know? Please provide the output of the following:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • the --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum; and
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth. Please ensure this parameter is set to the last boot when this occurred.

On a standard Kernel, not the Zen kernel, is this still occurring?

some log...

Yes. Those “hardware errors” happen on normal Linux version 6.12.4-1-MANJARO (linux612@manjaro) (gcc (GCC) 14.2.1 20240910, GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.43.0) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Mon, 09 Dec 2024 11:58:37 +0000

although regardless of those errors, the computer is stable and works perfectly. until I screenlock it with meta-L and then sometime later after the reboot thing happens. But not sure if the reboot thing is also related to kernel 6.12.4 or something else.

Can you also provide some System Information for better context:

Output of the following command (formatted according to forum requirements) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

  • Is your system set to hibernate?
  • Do you have swap space configured?
  • Does your / partition have enough space available?

Regards.

Worth testing version 6.6, then.

System seems to be running hot.

I’d guess overheating might be an issue here.

looks pretty normal to me…

Around 50/60 is pretty normal for me. :smile_cat:

well, the cpu and gpu thermal and fan control are done by respective parties by themselves… I have done 0 interference or adjustments there… so must be ok?

except I turned off any kernel power management there for more stability… nohibernate pcie_aspm=off cpufreq.off=0

Mine is:

[...]
Sensors:
System Temperatures: cpu: 41.0 C mobo: 35.0 C gpu: nvidia temp: 43 C
Fan Speeds (rpm): N/A gpu: nvidia fan: 69%
[...]

Still seems a bit high to me.

Showoff. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Yes, I know, mine could probably be better too.

Anyway for right now I let it run with kernel 6.6 and report back the behavior if there is anything to report.

Yup. I know. But, well…

Kernel 6.6.65 has worked perfectly those 2 days now. No random weird reboots, no weird hardware error messages … so far so good.

Well, 6.6 is an LTS version. Maybe not the latest but greatest is highly subjective.

Looks suspicious! Cleann out the fan vents. And check fan connections.

no it’s not. no I don’t. However I removed the pcie_aspm=off from kernel commands and somewhat later now I have:

Sensors:
  System Temperatures: cpu: 50.0 C mobo: 39.0 C gpu: amdgpu temp: 55.0 C
    mem: 64.0 C
  Fan Speeds (rpm): fan-1: 0 fan-2: 766 fan-3: 969 fan-4: 0 fan-5: 943
    fan-6: 0 fan-7: 0 gpu: amdgpu fan: 724

as expected. Also don’t forget, it’s desktop pc, not some laptop. And AMD cpu and gpu.

I believe that is the greatest contributor. I don’t know 'bout the graphics card, but as far as I know AMD CPUs run hotter than Intel due to their build.
