Stuck in Emergency Mode after update

Hi all,

After the latest updatem I keep getting booted into emergency mode. This happebed after the last time the Kernal updated, but it somehow fixed itself, or I did something without realizing it. However now I can’t seem to sort it.

I have two installs of Manjaro, one on an SSD, which is the one I am using now and boots fine, and another on an nvme PCI, which is the one I use and is the one which is stuck. The problem seems to be that on the grub it claims to be Kernal 5.21 (or whatever), but on the ‘E’ selection still shows 5.15.

I have booted into the root of the nvme (using manjaro-chroot -a) and tried Syyuu and updating the grub, but this doesn’t seem to have done anything, and attempts to use Syu or a variant seem to run into a time out failure during the ‘commnity’ section. This might not be being helped by my internet which seems to be a bit dodgy tonight.

The update error message is:

there is nothing to do

I have a feeling a lot of this is being caused by having two manjaro’s installed, and a motherboard that’s a bit too old to boot directly to a pci slot (the grub is on the SDD), so maybe when my install of manjaro updates, it doesn’t update the grub? PErhaps if I update the SDD manjaro it will fix itself, but I a reluctant to do that at the moment as it will mean I have nothing to boot to!

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, it looks much more readable now! I still don’t understand it ofcourse!

I don’t know is the modules failed to be looked up are relevant or not, but that one is very likely problematic:

Since that service is enabled, your system should boot in EFI mode, and thus requires an EFI partition. That error would indicate your system fails to locate that partition.
We’d need to know your partitioning scheme:

lsblk -fa
cat /etc/fstab
lsblk -fa

loop0

and then

cat /etc/fstab

If I entered them correctly!

This might also be worth mentioning, but when I do load Manjaro on the nvme, it comes up with a screen saying ‘unable to find 66c9… etc. press any key’. Usually, pressing any key goes to the log in screen and all works fine. I’ve always assumed this is because my motherboard doesn’t ‘see’ the nvme in the PCIe slot, but would it also be involved in causing he current problem?

UUIDs don’t show, weird… Plan B:

sudo parted -l

This seems wrong, but we’ll skip that for now…

sudo parted -l

I think the way I have things set up is that the grub loads on the SSD (sdb), and I use that to boot the nvme.

The sdb2 might possibley be a timeshift I made as a back up a while ago.

Still no luck. Plan C:

sudo blkid
sudo blkid

Thanks for all the help, I didn’t realise I had made it so complicated!

No worries, it’s not your fault.

So with this, we can confirm the UUIDs recorded /etc/fstab are the right ones, which is the first place for errors in mounting.
Now let’s dig further in the journal.

journalctl --boot=-1 --unit=boot-efi.mount

There is one big red area though:

I was hoping to find more details there, but i don’t see anything related…

I found some results suggesting the issue may come from init parameters, pointing to the wrong partition. I would retry booting, and paying attention to the messages (possibly checking again the logs at that time) for anything related:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=202726

Ok, so from the grub I select the nvme Manjaro (listed as 5.21 or something), go to the drive so and so doesn’t exists, press any key then get:

FAILED: Failed to start Load KErnal Module
FAILED: Failed to start CLI Netfliter Manager
FAILED: Failed to mount /boot/efi
DEPEND: Dependecy failed for Local File Systems.

Then the blurb about being in emergency mode, where it won’t let me type anything (I press the keys and nothing happens). Pressing ‘Control-D’ just brings up the same prompt.

The log says:

journalctl --boot=-1 --unit=<service_name>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
[andreas-ms7850 /]# journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --catalog

For what it’s worth, we could check the details of the service failed before the mount.

journalctl --boot=-1 --unit=ufw.service
