Manjaro random freezes

Hello, I’ve installed manjaro couple days ago on a fresh SSD. I also have windows installed on other disk, working prefectly fine for a long time. Problem is that manjaro freezes randomly with no obvious reason (I have to hard reboot to bring it back to life). It can happen right after boot, even several times in a row, as well as after several hours of normal work. System stops responding entierly, it’s not just graphics.
I tried to research the problem myself, even though I’m pretty new to linux, but with no success. It happens with or without some programms launched, some usb devices plugged in on not, on a new empty user, etc. What I tried to monitor:

  • journalctl - it has errors, but mostly on boot. At the moment when freeze happens no errors there. Example of the erorrs:

  • I’ve read somewhere it could be a memory problem so I ran memtest86 - no errors.
  • Thought maybe CPU throtling, so I opened system monitor, and top in terminal, and was waiting system to freeze to capture the moment. I have a photo but can’t upload as a new user. In short - cpu was not overloaded at all, most loaded core - 2%.
Also I did check a hash sum after downloading the manjaro image.

Is this required?

This seems to be a syntax error, I guess nomodeset was meant.

If you use so much swap it’s likely your system is not frozen but extremely slow. Check why you run so deep into swap usage.

Thanks for replying so fast!

I don’t think this is required, just googled for similar problems and these options solves it for some people, but not for me unfortunately.

Yes, you’re probably right.

How do I do that?

I checked stat /swap/swapfile

Looks like it’s last change was around the time when I installed manjaro, and the size seems not so large - 512 MiB
Same in memifo:

grep Swap /proc/meminfo
SwapCached: 0 kB
SwapTotal: 524284 kB
SwapFree: 524284 kB

Is it some different file, or any directions where I should look at?

Looks like my problem was too old motherboard firmware. I’ve no freezes for a couple of days after I installed last update from asus.

Ah yes. Those BIOS updates.
In fact your CPU didnt even get support on that board until version 809 (3 updates above state in initial post) … and there have been 10 more updates since then ranging from stability to performance to RAM compatibility.
Glad everythings working now.
