Realtek 8821CE Wi-Fi card does not work out of the box in Manjaro

I have Manjaro KDE with the Linux 5.14 kernel; but regardless of any Linux OS in my laptop, I get no wireless Internet connection upon boot. My Wi-Fi works perfectly in Windows 10, but I have to connect an RJ45 Ethernet interface to connect to the Web in Manjaro.

Here is the configuration of my laptop (main system and Network), via Speccy. My ASUS E410MA uses the AW-CB304NF Wireless Network Card.

Should I post this information from within Manjaro? I’m posting this from within Windows.

You should post it from manjaro to, also check that fastboot is disabled in windows since that can block linux from using the wifi device.

Fast Boot has no effect. Whether enabled or disabled, my Wi-Fi won’t activate automatically. I didn’t have this problem with my Acer A314-21 or ASUS E402WAS laptops. My Wi-Fi would activate regardless of the OS that I boot. In my E410MA, it is restricted to Windows, and I wonder if the factory preset the network adapter that way, or I need to download a Wi-Fi driver for Manjaro.

Does the MSM have some drivers choices to install for the card?
From this page: If Manjaro did not install a wireless network card driver during installation, it can be installed here as well.

Searching the forum for the specific hardware provides this solution:

We’re working partially in the dark here, so:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and press the three dots … below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

Sorry I’m late with my response. Lots of distractions around.

Here is the configuration of my system from my terminal…

Again, it seems that ASUS did not supply a universal hardware driver for this laptop (unlike the one in their E402WA laptop), and the driver that was supplied will only run in Windows. It won’t even run in my UEFI. To upgrade my BIOS, I have to use Windows Update or the ASUS hardware/software updater in Windows.

As I feared, no driver loaded, so go to hanzel’s post, follow ris recommendations and if they work out, please don’t forget to come back to your question after your issue has been solved and click the 3 dots below the answer to mark a solution like this below the answer that helped you most:
Solution
so that the next person that has the exact same problem you just had will benefit from your post as well as your question will now be in the “solved” status.

Didn’t work. I used this procedure…

sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo pacman -S dkms linux514-headers
pamac build rtl8821ce-dkms-git

…And yet, somehow, I don’t think it installed, and I don’t know why.

What is “Try enabling dig”, and where do I go to apply that procedure?

  1. There is no output from your build process, so we cannot see what went wrong. :frowning:
  2. Did you read the entire thread, or just the solution?

The output of those commands would give some clues, please provide them so we can see what is happening on your end.

inxi tries to list your WAN IP. Since it does not find something to work with it suggest some avenues to explore to fix this, for the issue with the wifi card this is not relevant. Dig is a flexible tool for interrogating DNS name servers.

Edit: According to the AUR comments there might be a issue with a driver from the kernel that might be loaded and failing. I’m not the person to help you start fixing that tho. Please blame system assemblers for putting together systems with poor driver support for your troubles :stuck_out_tongue:

Finally, it works!

I tried this…

pamac update -a

…Then I tried this…

pamac build rtl8821ce-dkms-git

I think it attempted to perform a downgrade of the driver version, and it couldn’t, and restored the latest version in my Linux build. After a restart, a bunch of Wi-Fi connections displayed, including my own.

That looks alot better, congrats on fixing it :+1:

Just one thing before I let this thread close: How do I find out what Web site the package manager found this driver? I need to apply it to the operating systems in my VM, not all of which are Linux-based.

Not possible. That driver is for Linux. It comes from GitHub - tomaspinho/rtl8821ce which you could also see by viewing the PKGBUILD of the AUR package.
