Random screen freezes but can still use mouse/shortcuts

I have been using the i3wm build of Manjaro for a month or so. Everything is fine except for one issue which seems to occur randomly. What is displayed on my screen will be effectively frozen - changing workspaces, opening a new terminal, etc will not register on the display (with or without an extra monitor) - but, those actions are nevertheless being registered. In other words, the display becomes frozen and I can still use my mouse, issue shortcut commands to reboot or save my work, but there is nothing I can do (except reboot) to unfreeze the display.

I have read around and the common theme seems to be that the problem has something to do with the kernel or drivers. Unfortunately I have no idea how to debug this, or go about reinstalling/updating these kinds of things. Any suggestions on what to do?

More info:
My machine is a thinkpad X11 carbon and lspci indicates that my graphics card is Intel UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07). In fact, everything from lspci contains the word ā€œIntelā€, if that helps. If there is other relevant information I should provide, please ask.

The frequency of the freezes is a bit inconsistent but could happen several times a day. While it is mostly speculation, the freeze seems to occur when I switch between work space (Mod+Number). It rarely (if at all) has happened while working idle on a single workspace.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see whatā€™s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin liesā€¦

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required informationā€¦ (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

  3. Next time when it happens, just reboot immediately after saving all of your work using REISUB and provide the output to journalctl --boot=-1 | tail --lines=50 as well.

:+1:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment youā€™re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, ā€¦ you have without typing it every time

Thanks!

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment youā€™re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel, ā€¦ you have without typing it every time

I have tried to add some details (mostly from the inxi command), although exactly what should be provided and how to get that information is not clear to me.

is EOL. Upgrade to 54. LTS or 5.10 LTS

Which screen gets frozen as you seem to have 3 monitors?

I canā€™t see anything else obviously wrongā€¦

Are there distro issued instructions on how to do that? Couldnā€™t find anything on the Arch page.

Which screen gets frozen as you seem to have 3 monitors?

Strange. I only have primary and secondary. Both of them freeze.

Thanks. This seemed to escalate into a worse symptom - hard freeze requiring reboot including a flashing capslock light.

The process of ā€œupgradingā€ kernels seems non-existent. One only speaks of ā€˜addingā€™ or ā€˜removingā€™ kernels so it is very confusing. Also confusing is which one to install (I ended up just using the manjaro-settings-manager->kernel to look). 5.4 or 5.10 LTS was recommended, yet my currently running kernel is 5.9.16-1, why am I upgrading to 5.4.100-1 (LTS) which has a smaller ā€œmajor revisionā€ number (according to the kernel wiki)?

:sob:
Read this if you donā€™t know about REISUB.

Yes. ā€œUpgradingā€ is my personal terminology as an LTS kernel is an ā€œupgradeā€ compared to a non-LTSā€¦ :innocent:

Thatā€™s EOL (End-of-life)

Whne using a rolling release model (like Arch or Manjaro) kernel management becomes something that should become something of your DNA.

Thanks! Unfortunately Iā€™ve been running with the new kernel for a over a week and still the problems of the OP are happening. Somehow less frequent (?) but still there and in exactly the same way already described. Here is the journalctl output from the most recent crash:

Maybe give Manjaroā€™s sway community edition a shot and play with it as a live media for a while. Sway is waylandā€™s i3 equivalent. Waylandā€™s way ( :innocent:) less prone to graphical hick-ups and more secure than the ancient xorg. Just my 5 cents :slightly_smiling_face:

I have a similar problem for say 10 days. Manjaro Cinnamon, nvidia drivers. Tried kernel 5.11 and 5.4.
I can access the console with ctrl+alt+f3, but only a reboot will fix the graphical freeze.

Kernel 5.11 is an experimental kernel. Have you tried 5.10 yet as per:

:crossed_fingers:

Yeah seriously considering itā€¦ To be honest I was having similar issues with i3 when I was using Fedora so itā€™s probably an i3/X thing combined with my specific hardware setup. Just now my primary screen started randomly flickering a black screen and then remained completely black (not off, black screen but backlit). I wouldnā€™t be so annoyed if there was a simple way to restart i3 or whatever is driving the glitch without needing to restart. Mod+R does nothing of course.

Personally Iā€™m running sway alongside Gnome (under Wayland) and never have experienced issues like tearing or completely distorted rendering ever since (like I did on xorg)ā€¦

Sigh. So this is still happening. Is there really no other suggestions on how to debug/investigate?
