Yep. Franz and Firefox are your big offenders. Nothing wrong there.

Yep. Does Chromium use less RAM?

btw maybe you can help me updatedb.service is taking long for booting to the workspace.

Not really. All browsers use a big chuck of RAM these days.

You can disable it, if you don’t use locate commands to find files.
sudo systemctl disable updatedb

But would it cause any problems?

Only if you use something like locate to find files.

updatedb.service just updates the databse of files on the system, so other applications, like locate can search it.

ah okay sry for asking because I haven’t done it before.

Actually, I use Dolphin to locate files

KDE uses baloo to index the files, it’s probably what you’re using.

ah okay, so I can disable updatedb?

If you don’t want to use locate, then yes.

I’ve never used locate yet. Therefore I disabled it now.

That seems to be fine. My usage usually looks like that after having 7-8 ff tabs open.

Hi, would like to join into the discussion because since some weeks (aprox. update from Jan. 2019) the memory consumption of my system seems too high.

First of all, I use baloo / akonadi. I am aware of the higher resource consumption, but a consumption of 1 GB RAM seems too high. Usually after a clean boot my System used about 600 MB.

The picture shows the output of htop. Is it normal that ballo to run twice and the plasma shell several times?

Welcome joining the discussion @mepi0011

Well, how much RAM do you have? Mine is 8GB RAM and KDE DE+Apps use totally 2.8GB

Thinking of changing the DE to Openbox, Xfce or DeepIn using less RAM because from booting the laptop up to the workspace under KDE DE it takes almost over 3mins

My System has 8 GB RAM. This is not the problem.
It bothers me that my system is using more memory than necessary. I would like to fix this.

You shoud buy a SSD, 3 Minutes are very long!
On my parents PC the boot time was similar to your boot time.
With a small ceap SSD I was able to reduce the boot time to the half.

My system is an seven year old machine, my boot times are o.k. for me.

Before you do that, you may want to make sure you are not trying to mount devices that are no longer present and check out this thread:

this will be a good idea buying an SSD!
