nVidia drivers not working properly

Hi guys!
II have just installed the latest Manjaro Xfce and it seems like a great linux. Fast and straightforward installation and even HDMI seems to work. However, the same usual nVidia linux problem appeared. It looks like the driver is installed but won’t work.

Is there a way how to start a game with the nVidia drivers? The Prime manager or whatever is in charge of switching the graphics doesn’t seem work which was the same issue as on Debian Bullseye.

AFAIK it’s not

DR_PRIME=1 glxinfo

but actually

prime-run glxinfo

for Nvidia.

This looks like the card is installed but how to run a game/application using the nVidia drivers? Standard launch results in running the game/application with the Intel Mesa driver with the high performance mode selected.

Depends. I think.

I’m not a gamer and very rarely play the 1 game I have, so cannot give you exact instructions. And also, you use Xfce while I use KDE so the procedure might be different than what I’ve got, so I’ll explain only what has to be done, not how to do it.

For Steam:

Edit the game’s Properties or Preferences or Settings or Whateveryouwannacallit and change the execution command to:

prime-run %command%

I think.

Direct shortcuts:

Right-click on the shortcut and open it’s Properties/Preferences. Where the executable is specified, prepend:

prime-run

To the line.

.desktop files:

Edit the file. In the Exec= line, make sure it starts with prime-run:

[...]
Exec=prime-run <command>
[...]

Where <command> is the command previously used. So prime-run is just prepended to the command.

  3. Close the window. This method allows you to pick when the discrete NVidia GPU should be used on a per-game basis.

But:

Instead of primusrun %command% use prime-run %command%.

I only play X-Plane that is installed in my home folder using the official installer. Never managed to properly install nVidia on Debian so switched to Mint and it all worked well until Mint started having issues with sound. It worked out of the box after the Driver Manager installed the proprietary drivers. X-Plane wouldn’t even start with the Intel Mesa drivers. However, there is the opposite issue as it start with the Intel Mesa and ignores the nVidia as it is now. When I try to run “prime-run X-Plane_x86-64” it gives me an error.

/usr/bin/prime-run: line 2: X-Plane-x86_64: command not found

Tried to open the launcher with /usr/bin/prime-run and no luck.

This is the command it can’t find, not prime-run. prime-run is producing the error. So find the correct path for X-Plane-x86_64 and use that.

Edit:

You can also see if the game is installed and where it’s installed with:

which X-Plane-x86_64

And if it is installed you can try and run it with:

prima-run </path/returned/by/which/command>

or, perhaps simpler would be

prime-run $(which X-Plane-x86_64)

to run it if it is installed.

It doesnt appear the file is found. (because it is typed incorrectly?)
Use ls to list things there …
You may even begin to start typing and hit Tab to autofill the path.

Maybe you need optimus-manager to switch between Intel and Nvidia? Might be useful if you are on a laptop. Don’t know how it will work with LightDM, but you should be able to find instructions here
I personally have never needed to use prime-run %command% with optimus-manager.

optimus manager is for changing modes.
The ‘dynamic’ prime-run should work once OP figures out how to launch the desired application.

Hi guys,
Nothing suggested worked but I followed your advice and installed the optimus-manager and optimus-manager-qt. It all works now and it’s easy to switch between the graphics. This video helped extremely(should be on wiki)!!

Once I installed those packages and tried to switch the graphics it told me that there is not a power management installed on my system as I assumed it’s automatic. That could have been the reason why the nVidia didn’t work properly because the power management was missing(I wondered where the battery icon was :slight_smile: ). Laptop-mode installed and the fun may begin. My sincere thanks and appreciation to all of you guys!!!

But … but … I dont think you needed or wanted to do that. laptop-modetools is old, and conflicts with the preferred TLP.
In examples above there was nothing wrong with your setup - you just did not launch your X-Plane correctly.
If you had power issues that was a different problem.

I guess if it works it works … but I think this may not have been the optimal solution.

Yes, installed TLP this morning instead as none of them was installed. That’s the thing I had no idea how to launch it. I assumed that nVidia should be up as the main vga at the time of launching X-Plane as I did it on linux Mint. The HDMI is still a bit tricky and the TV has to be on at boot but I’ve bought mini display cable to HDMI so this could sort the HDMI issue. Don’t care about sound as I use headphones for the game.

It sounds like on Mint you just installed nvidia and bypassed the intel entirely.
You could still do that … but you lose out on powersaving, and have to contend with nvidia compatibility with your whole desktop.
