PulseAudio plugin from panel not showing up

The menu that should appear by clicking on the speaker symbol in the panel shows not up sometimes.
After restart it may work again, but the issue will appear often.
The button looks the whole time like activated. I can scroll to control volume an rightclick, but not leftclick.

Hi @definitiv :wink:

Do you mean this one?

grafik

Hey @megavolt
yes, this.
If its xfce at least.

Yes, @definitiv it is XFCE and also the normal preinstalled panel object. For me it works perfectly by leftclicking. Never had an issue on any system.

Maybe there is an issue with your system or the gpu driver or the sound? Sorry I have no idea without information about your system and logs.

@megavolt
will this help you?

@definitiv not really.
That could help more:

inxi -Fazy
journalctl -b0 | curl -F'file=@-' https://0x0.st
free -h

By the way… what means:

Maybe you have not enough RAM, HDD is hardly working, maybe a semi freeze of the system? What did you run, when it freeze, if it freeze? Is everything else working at that moment?

Maybe the panel freeze? With

xfce4-panel -r

you could restart the panel.

I think a semi freeze is not likely, because the rest of the panel works and even the speaker icon with scrolling to adjust volume or right click.

I don’t know if its grammatically correct, the sentence was meant this way “the menu (…) shows not up sometimes” but i wanted to discribe which menu exaclx is meant:
“(the menu that)should appear by clicking on the speaker symbol(…)”

@definitiv

It seems “Microsoft Teams” crashed and produce a coredump. Then it says:

Nov 26 08:07:06 Doloris pulseaudio[916]: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write.
Nov 26 08:07:06 Doloris pulseaudio[916]: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
Nov 26 08:07:06 Doloris pulseaudio[916]: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.

Did the problem happen with Microsoft Teams?

Beside that…

Kernel 5.7 is EOL (end of life) and is already dropped by the kernel devs (https://www.kernel.org/). Use the latest LTS (long term support) Kernel, which is Kernel 5.4 or upgrade it to the latest stable which is 5.9. In any case it is good to have at least 2 kernels installed. The LTS one and a stable one.

Since it could be a ALSA BUG, which is included in the kernel, you will need to upgrade kernel to the latest stable one and see if it is fixed there.

Since you use the nvidia driver, keep sure you install the latest supported driver, only 390xx, 450xx and 455xx are working with kernel 5.9. Otherwise you will be greeted with a black screen. nvidia 340xx will not work:

Device-1: NVIDIA GF110 [GeForce GTX 560 OEM] vendor: Micro-Star MSI

@megavolt first huge thanks for the help.
I stayed with 5.7 because of the Nvidia drivers, but now i change like you recomendet to 5.9 and rebooted.
I would watch out for the issu, but the new kernel broke my wifi…
I tried 5.4 LTS but it failed:

a bit off-topic question, which i coulde’t answer with the wiki: Dose the Kernel, if I run the latest stable, automatic upgraded to the newest one when it gets avileble or do i have to update them manualy in every scenario?

:see_no_evil:

I hope your read the links i gave and used mhwd…

First install the driver:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia-340xx
sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-390xx

Then install the kernel:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux59 linux54

Why this? Because mhwd installs then the correct nvidia modules for kernels also.

Do you use any special modules for your wifi?

Without a internet connection, sure, it can not receive the packages. Boot again with kernel 5.7 and install it, if wifi works there.

Yes for every major version, like 5.4, 5.8 or 5.9 etc., but not within the major version like 5.4.11 -> 5.4.12, that is updated automatically with an upgrade.

I have mhwd -a used for the nvidia drivers and used the gui for the kernel, that is discribed in the wiki.
Is that a problem?

At the moment i use usb-teathering for internet :wink:

Not really. If it works for you, then everything is ok, but i experienced problems with the auto install.

Okay, i think i will try manual later.
Thanks for your help so far, i really appreciate it!
