Nvidia Driver Update Problem

Hi, since the last update of the kernel and nvidia driver (2 weeks ago) I have this serious issues with my PC. I use an older Nvidia Geforce 1080 GTX from MSI. My processor is a newer AMD Ryzen 9 5900X from late 2021. As long as I use the standard video-linux-driver (Version 2018.05.04) one of my monitors (I use 2) is from time to time flickering in the backround, also ram overruns are part of the problem. When I install the “current” driver from Nvidia I get warnings and after the restart and establishment of the login screen the screen goes black and loops back to the login screen, so I’m forced to remove the last update over the shell/console.

The question is, who should I downgrade the driver and purge these kind of errors?

Welcome to the forum!

What warnings? Your log shows the proprietary NVIDIA driver installed successfully.

Please post your system info as outlined here:

Please also see:

In the future, please use proper formatting for terminal output. I’ve done it for you this time.

Thanks for the warm welcome and the lessons…

About the warnings, in the output you see serveral warnings, like this one:

==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'aic94xx'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'qla1280'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'qed'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'qla2xxx'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'wd719x'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'bfa'
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: 'xhci_pci'

==> WARNING: consolefont: no font found in configuration

I think the xserver is crashing, the question is why?

So, that’s my system:

Those warnings are not related to graphics drivers. Those are optional linux-firmware packages for rare devices most of use do not have and do not need the drivers for.

The proprietary NVIDIA drivers are not installed. Nouveau is a reverse-engineered open-source driver that usually doesn’t work out so well.

See:

Logs?

Not by now, a friend of mine thought so because of the black screen after the restart and new login in the system and the loop back to the login screen.

you are using wayland, so switch to xorg and try again

Your inxi shows the GPU driver in use is the opensource nouveau driver.

This works fine for Nvidia cards < 1000 - but not optimal for the newer cards.

To use the proprietary Nvidia driver

sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia

If your system - after restart - is still using the opensoure driver you remove it - and restart the system

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux

Wayland and Nvidia combination requires special attention - please consult

You can switch from the login screen - default is lower left corner - which system to use Wayland or X11.

Another option is to switch to unstable branch and do a full system sync to use the newer Nvidia 535.x driver

sudo pacman-mirrors -aS unstable && sudo pacman -Syyu
