I followed some instructions from https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/slackware-multi-monitor-config-4175643001/page2.html#post5932671 to try to manually configure the screen:

Is it possible to enable csm/legacy boot on your systems firmware configuration tool?
It could be just as simple as stupid, that hp actively disables hardware features if Windows is not detected. With a switch to old legacy boot this could be worked around maybe.

I would add the PCI ID to the Device section of the driver

You might also add more monitor properties like Modeline

He can not even load the Xorg driver, because the underlying kernel driver can not start up KMS for some reasons. Xorg will not work without KMS on amdgpu. We can stop to work on Xorg, to fix this. :joy:

Looks like I can no boot into legacy with the current install as it does not detect my OS. I guess I have to do a fresh install via Architect as it’s the only one that allows custom setttings for UEFI/Legacy (as far as I remember). Will try that in a few days and see what I get. Last time I tried booting legacy (before the fix that removed the need for mce=off) the kernel was segfaulting pretty quickly. I did not save a picture of the screen at that time as UEFI was kind of working…

Looks like I have two sets of settings for Screen/Monitor/Card… I wonder what’s that about?

Anyway, installing the kernel from source did not help (yet). I’m going to try with 5.0 rc1 soon and see what get. The only thing I noticed was that the screen would not recover from sleep now… I guess that’s a regression in the kernel.

journalcrl -b -1 | grep -i modesetting does indeed say that when successful, and those lines are missing from the unsuccessful one.

Do you have any tips on how to debug that particilar section? Or where to report problems related to it? (I really don’t know what I should do when encountering such problems).

I suppose because you requested a second screen instead of the default (:0).

should be

X :0 -configure

It is recommended to include the driver to the kernel image.
Edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and add amdgpu at MODULES:

MODULES=(amdgpu radeon)

Note: radeon may not be needed.

Then re-create kernel images

sudo mkinitcpio -P

Funny Note: Surprisingly, the X configure command created a new PCI ID

I could never imagine this “The Creator” ability of Xorg!!!

No success with adding amdgpu, radeon or both in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf. The only thing id does is moving the freeze earlier in the process so I get to notice it sooner, which kind of helps with the retry process :smile:.

These are the errors from the start of the boot… I think they’re irrelevant as they appear even for successful builds, but I want to document them here.

This is starting only with radeon, it complains about missing /dev/dri/card0 which is the same ting I see in the logs between a successful and unsuccessful run:

Not always occurred problems are a PITA. They seem to have to do more with hardware than with software.

Check the difference of cold boot (Shutdown->Power ON) and warm boot (Reboot). There should be some IMO…

You could try to reach out to HP support and all how to install the latest firmware, maybe they even have an beta firmware for you

Also could you try boot Params

acpi_osi=windows iommu=soft

If this doesn’t do it, could you run memtest86

These mce errors don’t look nice, even for a not supported product.

Restoring from hibernate works every time. Reboot vs cold boot, I don’t see any difference in startup success.

I will reach out to them after I try legacy boot one more time this weekend, will have to summarize this entire post into an email in a way that makes sense and skips over all the parts tha’t did not lead anywhere.

acpi_osi=windows iommu=soft did not help.

Memtest86 shows no errors; mce was the reason it would not work with the 01.03 bios but that got fixed in the kernel., could those also be a kernel induced problem?

mce wasn’t fixed in the kernel. It’s a hardware thing. It could mean a hardware defect

  • I tried installing and booting in legacy mode, no change in success rate.
  • Installed the CLI version through Architect, it still has problems with amdgpu…

Now… this error is pretty generic… searching online for it shows posts from years before with people encountaring it in different situations. This one might be relevant: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200087

According to the last messages there, gentoo should be able to boot on similar APUs without any parameters, and there is something in the latest kernel (as of 17’th of January) and int the kernel’s .config that allows that. I will keep an eye on that post to see what happens, as installing gentoo is beyond my abilities right now, and the other distribution they mentioned, Calculate Linux, did not manage to boot for me at all.

  • There is a kernel parameter that seems to help a bit: intremap=off. With this one I believe the boot is successful every time, with a CLI install, but only the screen freezes. I assume this because I can now press the shutdown button once and the laptop actually shuts down, instead of needing to hold down that button for multiple seconds to force a shutdown. Also if I blindly type in the username and password to log in and press TAB I hear a beeping sound I normally hear in the tty when I do the same actions with the screan working (and the sound does not play for a random set of keystrokes). So my assumption is that it’s just the pixels that don’t get drawn on the screen now.

Anyway, the only thing that’s left for me now is to contact HP’s support and ask them about those hardware errors that keep popping up in the logs and tty… I have low expectiations from them since I’ve read posts on their forum from other people that bought a simmilar laptop and were trying out linux and nothing resulted.

The laptop came with Windows preinstalled which booted up normally, and I tried installing Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro and Calculate Linux on it so far, only Manjaro actually managed to boot properly, but only sometimes, the reset just froze every time.

From what I understand this is an issue with Linux in general and the AMD mobile APUs, since simmilar laptops from other vendors also have the problem of not being able to boot. So I doubt switching distros would help… although I’m curious if anybody ever managed to boot a Linux properly on this exact model.
