Problems with Manjaro Linux on a HP Elitebook 755 G5 with Ryzen 7 and Vega 10

My quest continues…

Hi,

I have a Ryzen 5 on a Lenovo laptop, I had to add this line before going further into the installation/booting process : ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0
Thus I don’t personally know what it does, but it worked. I used the Manjaro 18. With the v17, I had graphic issues that I haven’t experienced yet.

@Newmaz That’s some crazy parameter you got there, I’ll give it a try over the weekend and let you know if it works. The APU might be the same but the BIOS is different between lenovo and hp, but I hope this works.

How do you even debug stuff like this and find solutions?

#22

@sdwolf Let me know, I really do hope it works !

I tested with 4+ O.S. (Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, ArchLinux and more). I have encounter the same problem each time, my boot process didn’t go further, even from CLI installation. That narrowed the possibilities. From there, I did some research to see if people encountered similar issues as me. And finally, some people from my school helped me out to get through it.

I have not enabled Secure Boot and all the Windows settings are set to off.

*EDIT : (From /etc/default/grub – when installation is done and before rebooting, they modified this line.) GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet resume=UUID=0b34h567-66c4-4f8a-913a-0700c1a610f9 ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0”

#23

@Newmaz Unfortunately ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0 did not do anything for me.

But I managed to progress, found from https://www.reddit.com/r/Hewlett_Packard/comments/9jjndg/elitebook_745_g5_wont_install_linux/ and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1796443 that adding mce=off allows me to boot with BIOS version 01.03.01.

Here are my kernel parameters so far:

iommu=soft mce=off acpi=strict processor.max_cstate=5 idle=nomwait

With these I managed to install XFCE from an USB, switched to testing branch and installed the latest kernel (4.19.6).

I still get freezes at startup, yet they are less frequent now.

One thing that I notice, every time it freezez I have this error in systemd logs:

ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed \_SB.WMIV.WMPV, AE_AML_UNINITIALIZED_LOCAL (20180810/psparse-516)

I don’t know if it’s indeed the true cause since I see it in journalctl even for successful boots, but I definitely don’t see that during the boot itself.

@sdwolf I will have to look at what those command does. I have no clue what could cause that type of issues. If you find an answer, keep me up-to-date, I would like to know.

*EDIT : I have found that command on a french website (https://debian-facile.org/viewtopic.php?id=17677), try that out : dmidecode -t bios. I do see that ACPI is supported on my side.

With further research, some says that it’s a BIOS bug that has been around since 4.9 kernel. On a forum, they added that line to their grub and apparently, it fixes the bug : libata.noacpi=1. Therefore, they say that it disabled the kernel warning for that particular issue.

Any updates ?

#28

i see HP and their BIOS shenanigans are still going strong.

had some issues myself a few years back with a HP notebook, no working wifi, so i installed all sorts of drivers but still nothing, i was advised to get a newer bios so i updated the bios which made my cpu speed drop when it got to hot, then i installed linux to try and see whats up with my wifi and still nothing, later i took it apart and guess what… i dont even have wifi, but the model clearly says WITH WIFI, even has a dedicated button for it.

online support was not possible since i did not register my device with them(and give them phone numbers, name, address, email , place of work, what i use it for, etc, they were asking for everything exept my passwords), and it was an enterprise series, not personal.

and the store i bought it from refused me servising it, reason? i had unauthorized upgrade in another store (just added more RAM), 2 years later that store closed.

so they sold me a notebook with a dud wifi, and from what i read, there were about 300,000 units sold, that had the same issue, mostly in developing countries.

oh did i mention i payed about 700 euros for it ?

#29

I do not know where you bought it from, but I do not think HP has the right to refuse serving you based on that. Anyway, I had a nightmare scenario with MSI too. Some keys from my keyboard stopped working out of nowhere. They told me I had to send my pc and wait around a month. All the fees were on me. If the computer gets broken during transport, all my fault. I’ve never seen that type of customer service in my life. I had an issue with a laptop once, the company took care of everything.

#30

No progress unfortunately, I’m on 4.19.8-2 testing branch. Still not able to get to lightdm every time.

But when I do, everything is fine, I can watch videos, play steam games without a problem, no unusual fan activity, USBs and wireless mouse work OK, and apart for some abstract art for a fraction of a second right after I transition from login screen to desktop I see no glitches.

Also note, restoring from hibernate seems to work past the issue (although it happened once that I could not restore, but all the other times it worked).

#31

Actually I do have an update!

According to this comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1796443/comments/16 the mce problem has been fixed in the latest kernels. So I removed mce=off from the kernel parameters and now I can actually boot with the 01.03.01 bios version.

That’s one problem down, may still to go.

Current kernel parameters look like this:

iommu=soft acpi=strict processor.max_cstate=5 idle=nomwait

Still have ACPI Errors:

I tried removing all kernel parameters to see what’s happening now and it looks like the success rate improved a bit…

Anyway I noticed a weird error right before systemd’s output begins (before there was mce’s error and now it looks like it’s ACPI related.

Here’s the output of journalctl -b -1 | grep "ACPI"

Not sure if this is the cause of my remaining problems but they look incriminating.

#34

Based on the Xorg logs I assume when it’s successful it loads the amdgpu driver and when it’s not it loads the radeon driver.

I tried removing /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-radeon.conf and it seems to have improved the overall success rate but there are still bad starts.

Any suggestion on how to force it to always use amdgpu?

#35

I created the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf:

Section "Device"
     Identifier "AMD"
     Driver "amdgpu"
     Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

And it looks like this forces it to use amdgpu, but the problems don’t go away:

I’m hoping the 4.20 kernel (released next week?) has some goodies that help… otherwise it’s going to be a sad Christmas .

#36

There is no Problem on the Xorg side. Yours is a level higher. Kernel level. Sometimes I’t seems to be unable to load KMS, sometimes it cant find screens. I’d say if you’re lucky there will be a change with 4.21 next year.

The good thing is, that you do mistakes like this only once. On Linux, you have to look what you buy before you buy something and some vendors you have to ignore (like HP and Sony).

You could try the linux-amd-staging-drm-next-git

#37

The linux-amd-staging-drm-next-git package breaks the install and I had to chroot and uninstall it.

I wish I could debug this further but I have absolutely no idea how… if waiting for a newer kernel with a potential fix is the only chance I got then I guess I’ll have to work with it this way.
