I am running the pamac update command. At the time of launch, 40GB of RAM is available. After a while, the memory runs out and the system freezes. Similarly, if you perform an update from the GUI. Bizarre Pamac & Pacman behavior: used 62GiB memory, took 10min to refresh DBs

Earlier this afternoon (Fri Jan 5, 2024), my Pamac and Pacman were broken in a really bizarre way. When I attempted to check for updates via Pamac, Pamac filled my RAM (62GiB) with garbage then started using M2 storage as virtual RAM, and took about 10 minutes to update databases. Then on attempting to actually update 4 AUR packages, Pamac crashed. The general (and best) advice is to use the command line for updating, and to update your system packages before your AUR packages…

Yes. The pacdiff command can also be used for comparing the .pacnew files against your existing configuration files — see the man page — but this is a terminal-based procedure and not very user-friendly. Better is to use a GUI tool like meld (should be installed already) or manjaro-pacnew-checker (from the repository).

/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew contains the changes. But never blindly copy over the .pacnew onto your existing configuration files, because that could lead to a couple of nasty surprises. You’re supposed to merge them in, i.e. compare them side by side, and copy over the new settings to your existing files if applicable.

.pacsave files are the saved configuration files for packages you no longer have installed. You can choose to keep them or to delete them.

Don’t use pamac. It obviously has a memory leak, and I advise against its use until the problem has been remedied by its developer. Use only pacman and yay for the time being. Besides, your system is already up to date now anyway.

Correct. If you really do need a GUI for package management, then you can try octopi instead.

It supports the AUR as well, if properly configured to use yay as the back-end. However, it does not support Snaps or FlatPaks, if you need those.
