Possible ATA errors with kernel 6.12 on Asus K50IN

Spanish version of this post

Asunto: Posibles errores ATA con kernel 6.12 en Asus K50IN

Mensaje resumido:

Hola equipo de Manjaro,

He instalado Manjaro Cinnamon 6.12.44-3 (kernel 6.12.44-3-MANJARO, Cinnamon 6.4.10) en un Asus K50IN y el sistema funciona correctamente, estable y usable, pero he detectado algunos errores ATA en dmesg:

Hardware:

CPU: Pentium Dual-Core T4300 @ 2.10GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce G102M

Chipset / SATA: NVIDIA MCP79 AHCI (BIOS configurada en AHCI)

Errores detectados:

ATA bus errors en el puerto sata1: interface fatal error y SError: { Handshk }.

Errores de firmware Nouveau (NVIDIA), sin impacto en el funcionamiento general.

Lo que hemos descartado:

Cable SATA: no, disco interno funciona.

Puerto SATA: no, funciona con otro disco y Windows.

AHCI/IDE en BIOS: correcto (AHCI).

Posibles causas:

Compatibilidad del kernel 6.12 con chipset NVIDIA MCP79.

Controlador libata o AHCI en el kernel.

Observaciones:

F.J.M.

Subject: Possible ATA errors with kernel 6.12 on Asus K50IN

Hello Manjaro team,

I installed Manjaro Cinnamon 6.12.44-3 (kernel 6.12.44-3-MANJARO, Cinnamon 6.4.10) on an Asus K50IN. The system works fine, stable and usable, but I noticed some ATA errors in dmesg:

Hardware:

CPU: Pentium Dual-Core T4300 @ 2.10GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce G102M

SATA controller: NVIDIA MCP79 AHCI (BIOS set to AHCI)

Detected errors:

ATA bus errors on port sata1: interface fatal error and SError: { Handshk }

Nouveau firmware errors (NVIDIA), no impact on normal operation

What we have ruled out:

SATA cable: no, internal disk is fine

SATA port: no, works with another disk and Windows

AHCI/IDE in BIOS: correct (AHCI)

Possible causes:

Kernel 6.12 compatibility with NVIDIA MCP79 chipset

Kernel AHCI / libata driver

Observations:

System runs well despite these errors

Known temporary workarounds: use LTS kernel (6.6) or add libata.force=1:noncq in GRUB

I would like to know if this behavior is expected and if there are recommendations to avoid these errors on recent kernels with this hardware.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,
F.J.M.

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the 3 dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi -czv8 as root in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --color --filter --verbosity=8
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.
  1. Or we can try to play hide and seek
Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

:footprints:

sata1: interface fatal error typically indicates a transmission error of some kind - either in the cabling, the connectors (on the mainboard or the disk/device) or a failing controller.

To rule out the disk as the culprit you could swap it out for another, and monitor whether or not the errors return.

Try re-seating your cables and see if that makes any noticeable difference; if not, consider replacing them completely.

It’s also possible that a SATA connector is damaged, or loose-fitting, in which case moving the disk to another SATA port might produce favourable results.

Check for all these scenarios.

Regards.

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

To that end, links are provided (below) - Please use them.

Be prepared to provide outputs from various commands when asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

Waiting for others to blindly ask questions can be counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – Instead, please help others to make informed suggestions, based on information you provide.

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8
