Constant file opens - media won't open

I have just bought a Pinephone with convergence. I am trying to open media (music, movies) in applications. When I attempt to open files, I am confronted with a barrage of ‘open’ options that cover the menu. If I avoid the open messages and select the file, X crashes. In Lollipop, I am able to select songs I sent to the phone and they play for an indeterminate amount of time, before stopping. It seems like the application temporarily loses access to the file. Not sure, though. Any assistance would be fantastic. Let me know what info you need. I have photos and videos of the problem, but it seems I cannot embed any of them in this forum!

get this also with calendar app. constant notification pop-ups of the eMMC and SDcard, after 20-30 seconds of this the phone goes black the vibrator comes on stuck and a power cycle is the only option.

Disabling notifications gets rid of the message, but not the extent of the underlying problem. I can select media in applications, now, but it still either cuts out or system crashes in the way @walscobry describes. In the filesystem it looks like disks are being mounted and unmounted successively. Sorry for the long post, but I’m just posting the output of the SMplayer error logs. Hello,

It seems you are with the default image installed, and if i recall correctly that was Beta1 with Phosh.

I would suggest to try and update, eventually edit /etc/pacman-mirrors.conf and modify the Branch line to be like this:

Branch = arm-testing

then run from terminal:
sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyu
The password is the PIN code 123456
Reboot the phone once that is done. It might give you some troubles at reboot and you might have to turn it off and on again. After that try again to play the videos.

In case of failure, use Jumpdrive to be able to flash the img on the eMMC

Hello, thank you @bogdancovaciu for your suggestions. Just noting; so, I have tried updating as you first suggested, and I have not seen any improvement. The problem persists. At the first run of lollypop I get a gst-plugins error and the constant disk mounts are still there. Nice try, but it looks like we have more than an update problem. It looks like a mounting problem. I’d hate to think it’s a hardware problem. It’s brand new.

Will do some tests later and see what i find, and also will notify the team to see if they have some ideas.

Update:

Managed to reproduce the issue:

• Using Open Media from whatever Player, it will try to mount in loop all the “partitions” making the browsing almost impossible
• The File Manager will do the same if moving or copying some files from whatever place/folder to another place/folder

Inconvenient Workaround:

• From the File Manager you open the file you want to play by clicking/tapping on it and it will start the default player defined in Settings > Default Applications
• For multiple files is best then to use Enqueue in SMPlayer in Default Applications

Tested:

• Lollypop
• VLC (even tho it gives a strange error when i first run it) - the UI is not scaling properly
• SMPlayer; once installed the system will default automatically to mpv Media Player but the interface is way to small to deal with it. It plays fine all the files i tested, but the phone needs to be set manually to Landscape to have good visuals.

Thanks so much for looking into this. Indeed, I also get a root and boot constant mount and unmount. Just to add; not sure if your system is similar to mine but the workaround does not work for me. Indeed, selecting songs as you have mentioned in this way as completely corrupted the bootloader for the OS and I now cannot boot into the manjaro OS.

I popped in a Ubuntu image to boot the phone from, and I recieved some errors:

failed to add storage device: make sure the storage device is correctly formatted

I’m still a bit new to this and I don’t know whether this is related, but I thought I’d mention it all the same.

edit: It seems the phone was on low power. The reason I couldn’t boot into manjaro was, it seems, because it didn’t have the power to boot, even with the power plugged into a fast charger, booting was refused. Strange, that booting to the manjaro OS doesn’t immediately draw power from the supply and Ubuntu touch does. There is still much to learn, here.
