Persistent Display Issues on ThinkPad P14S After Recent Updates

Hello,

For about a month, I’ve been experiencing persistent display problems, possibly after a system update or due to a broken package. I’m having trouble debugging the issue, so I’m reaching out for help.

The issues:

  • When I unplug my external monitors (connected via a ThinkPad dock), the system still thinks they’re connected. My mouse can move to these “phantom” screens, and windows remain assigned to them.
  • When I reconnect the monitors, they don’t work until I disable them in the display configuration, save, then re-enable them.
  • If I boot up with the monitors plugged in (or even not), the external displays often don’t work by default. I have to manually activate or deactivate/re-activate them in the display settings.
  • My screens will randomly turn black for 1 to 3 seconds, then return to normal. This happens on both the built-in and external displays.
  • Occasionally, when I close the laptop lid, the system shuts down unexpectedly—even with a full battery. This is a recent issue and might not be directly related to the display problems.

System info:

  • Kernel: 6.12.28-1
  • Laptop: ThinkPad P14S (Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD)

Does anyone have suggestions on how to debug or fix these issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance !

I may or may not be able to help, but posting the output of

inxi -zv8

is always recommended, as we’ll have some potentially useful system information. Cheers!

Greetings,

In the past, I have had similar issues (unstable or disfunctional external displays) when updating my Lenovo laptop to a newer kernel.

  1. Have you tried using a previous kernel version? Ideally, one that you know made the dock work as intended

  2. Have you tried another dock / display interface?

Thanks for the answer, I’m gonna try to downgrade
