I didn’t know what category to put this in.
I installed PearOS to check it out.
It is based on Arch Linux.
After I installed it I looked at the mirrors and I was surprised what I found.
It is using the Manjaro Standard mirrors.
Did you guys know that?
There is several distributions based on Manjaro - so not a big surprise.
After all, Manjaro is based on Arch and syncs the unstable branch directly from Arch, so it is really normal.
So would I get support here if I used Manjaro utilities and apps on PearOS?
From what I understand it only has 1 developer or if he has issues does he get help from here.
Just curious.
Only if the developer were a member here, in which case it would be similar to the Manjaro spins.
But then again, it may have an entirely different configuration, and probably an entirely different kernel too, so officially it’s not supported here at the Manjaro forum.
Just first hearing about PearOS now, I had to think, “What, are you trying to be like App..”
Low and behold, a few month old Plasma distro pretending to be MacOS.
The new pearOS distro is a Romanian project that picks up the concepts behind the original Pear Linux from 2011 and updates them
They do not claim or anything says they are based off Manjaro though.
This is from thier Github:
pearOS-arch-base
It is pearOS, but with Arch Base. Yes! It uses vanilla arch, less bugs, easier, better etc.
Why?
I had enough with debian-based distros. pearOS with arch base, solve some of the big problems with pearOS, for example:
“this require you to reinstall with every new release”
“sudo apt upgrade would/will destroy your installation”
Not anymore. With arch, there no more base-hopping Now, with arch, the system is now Rolling Release, as it should be :>
You can do now
sudo pacman -Syuand you will stil have the pearOS branding.
(I don’t think they know how debian and arch actually work..)
I would suspect it depends on what they did to get their Look and Feel.
“destroy your installation” could simply mean you lose all your PearOS modifications. Which might also say a lot about their abilities.
I meant that if breaks every time with a scheduled release cycle. Then it could potentially break at any given update with a rolling release cycle.
