CPU, memory and Swap at 100%

Hi
Started my pc yesterday and after a little while it went unresponsive and cpu, memory and Swap was at 100%. Rebooted but it’s the same. Fine at once but after a little while it becomes unresponsive. If I let it sit for 3-10 minutes it goes back to normal. Started htop and noticed that pamac uses 99% cpu and memory. What’s wrong and how can I fix it?

Hi @PihlT,

While I’ve never heard of such a thing, I do believe anyone trying to help would need more information.To that end, please see:

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

To provide terminal output, copy the text you wish to share, and paste it here, surrounded by three (3) backticks, a.k.a grave accents. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Portaest sed
elementum
cursus nisl nisi
hendrerit ac quis
sit
adipiscing
tortor sit leo commodo.

Instead of like this:

Portaest sed elementum cursus nisl nisi hendrerit ac quis sit adipiscing tortor sit leo commodo.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby improving legibility and making it much easier for those trying to be of assistance.

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

Please also provide the output for:

journalctl --grep="pamac" --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --grep= argument limits the output to any mention of pamac;
  • the --boot= argument limits the output to be from the previous boot. You can change this to be 0 for the _current_boot, -1 for the previous one, -2 for the one before that, and so on, and so forth.

Just tried to check for updates from the package manager and it hangs at 90%…

Please don’t post images, and please provide the info as requested above:

Thanks. Will try later. The pc is unresponsive so the only thing I can do is take a photo with my phone.

The command(s) for the logs and more doesn’t have to be run while the problem is occurring.

Welp.

I 've gone thorough it, and I don’t see a problem. But, I am no expert, so that doesn’t mean much.

Someone with more knowledge about pamac will have to check.

Hmm, I’m not sure that this is connected but all the partitions are around 90% used, which at least isn’t very good for the drives. As far as I know the system also reserves around 10% so this may well cause issues.

Seems like its sorted out now. after running journalctl --grep=“pamac” --boot=-1 i noticed the out of memory message so I googled a bit. Ran this command sudo pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qtdq) and removed a bunch of stuff. Looks like it ok now and I can also check for updates without it freezing . Thanks for your help :slight_smile:

I’m very happy for you. But just want to tell you to be careful doing something you don’t understand. For all you know, that could have been disastrous! It wasn’t, but it could have been easily. Did you at least inspect and confirmed the packages to be removed? Because your kernel can be in a “bunch of stuff” and you could have ended up worse off than you started.

For more information on what pacman does, check out:

man pacman

Just to add to @Mirdarthos warning; those cache files will accumulate again over time.

The best way to keep your drives/partitions at a healthy 65-75% is to:

  • go through your installed apps (pacman pkgs: 1759 flatpak: 42 snap: 21 is a fair lot) and assess if some can be removed.
  • clean out your home directory or move things to external drives
  • consider running a simple conky to keep an eye on your drives

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:
I’ll keep an eye on my drives and clean up a bit. I’ll probably upgrade my pc soon so just hoping it’s working until then :slightly_smiling_face:

@PihlT ,
now better to issue the

pamac update --force-refresh

command to fix possible damage of package database files, to force renew them all.
This action could prevent possible further problems if databases were corrupted during previous PC hangs.

Have a nice weekend!
