Pacman can be configured this way, that the program downloads the updates automatically.

Are you sure you mean Pacman? Or do you mean Pamac, which is not Pacman.
Since Pamac has this option, no Pamac just downloads packages and will not install packages automatically.
Both have the option to download but not install updates.
For pamac, it’s in the checkupdates subcommand, pacman has the -w Argument.

The key is “automatically” . And pacman has not such option to do this “automatically”. Creating a cron entry or a systemd timer is not a function that can be configured in the pacman config.
The pamac GUI has the option to download updates automatically and regularily.
