Can't shutdown/reboot/suspend system

Hello,

I’m using Manjaro for a while, after the latest Manjaro update, I can’t shutdown, reboot, or suspend the system properly.

When I shutdown/reboot:
Monitors turn black but the PC not shutting off.

When I suspend:
Systems go down but can’t resume.

I’ve tried installing Nvidia 450xx drivers and going back to kernel 5.4 but it didn’t help.
I don’t really know how to debug power issues, any guidance will be appreciated.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

    • Remove this:

      from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub

    • Ensure all your files are saved and no applications are running before going to the next step.

    • Execute:

      sudo update-grub
      sudo reboot

  1. If REISUO doesn’t ring a bell, please read this:

[HowTo] reboot / turn off your frozen computer: REISUB/REISUO

  2. After a REISUB, post the output of:

    journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 | tail --lines=50

  3. Why? Because the GTX 660 is supported by the 460.56 series driver.

  4. doesn’t provide memory information nor a lot of other things. For the future, use

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

    instead.

Hi, @Fabby, thanks a lot for your response!

Didn’t know about the REISUB/SUO, this will save me a lot of cold power downs.
I’ve followed your instructions and successfully managed to reboot using the SysRq method.
Added the following output as well.

Besides, I know my setup is quite old, almost 10 years old. Do you think I should use an older kernel? and not the latest (currently I use 5.10).

I know I used to have this issue before and the solution was related to the GPU driver I think. But I don’t remember exactly. Aren’t power-related issues sometimes happen because of the driver?

First ports of call:

  1. Old system: 5.4 kernel
  2. nVidia driver 460.56 from the Manjaro repositories.
  • If you wouldn’t know how to do this, shout out

  • report back after doing the above and if the problem is gone and if not, post a

    journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 | tail --lines=100

because 50 lines is in the middle of multiple crash logs.

Thanks again for the help, and sorry for the delay in my responses…

I’ve got the desired configuration:

  1. LTS kernel running: 5.4.108-1-MANJARO
  2. Nvidia driver from repo: 460.67

Still have an issue with the shutdown/reboot.

Few things about my system which may be related.
I have 2 monitors connected via Daisy-Chaining Display-port.

The last log doesn’t contain anything… Do you shut down using a REISUO when you cannot shut down?

Yes, once the monitors are off and the system looks like nothing happens, I used REISUB/SUO.

If you remove:

  • 1 Monitor

does it work then?

(just trying to make the config simpler because I’m stumped by your issue)

OK,
Looks like reboot is the only issue I have currently.
Shutting down works, it takes more than 3 Minutes but it works.
I get an error regarding:

...
umount: /oldroot/sys: target is busy.
...

I found this thread: Hanging On Shutdown: umount /oldroot/sys: target is busy
Tried following it but it didn’t help, I’ll need to retry that again, I’ve might miss something.

I’ll try working with only one monitort and will update it’s effect.

That’s a bug in the Manjaro kernel: it can be safely ignored. (I have this too)

Try:

sudo reboot

and report back, please?
