Optimus laptop issues

#1

Hello everyone,
I have switched from Ubuntu to Manjaro couple days ago and I have some issues regarding Optimus on my laptop. Here’s important part of inxi -Fx output

My issue is - when I use bumblebee I have to add acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=“Windows 2009” flags at boot, but that disables my touchpad completely. As I don’t need nvidia card to work at all I tried to uninstall bumblebee and install video-linux driver with mhwd instead. It works but I have to add nouveau.modeset=0 flag at boot. The problem is that on this driver my laptop battery life is halved. So I’m stuck with either no touchpad or very bad battery life atm.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bumblebee is hit and miss on newer laptops, as you are finding out.

Video-linux on optimus laptops is basically broken IMO and Manjaro devs don’t want to fix it.

Another choice is Prime, which would make your nvidia card your default gpu, but mhwd doesn’t support it so it has to be manually configured.

You could also try optimus-manager, which is in the repos but also needs to be manually configured.

This would be better if you don’t want to use your nvidia gpu by default, and by all reports is pretty stable.

Checkout the github page for more info.

#3

Thank you for your answer @sueridgepipe, unfortunately both these options are no-go. First one does exactly oposite of what I want to achieve, and optimus-manager is freezing at login. After some research it looks like it is going to require acpi_osi option too (but not the one I used previously as it is not working), so issue with touchpad will still probably occur. offtopic Timeshift is the best thing in history of things, maybe ever

#4

This is OPTIONAL.

MHWD HANDLE this OUT OF BOX - You don’t use NVIDIA card? Fine, just don’t call optirun and primusrun app for activate eGPU.

  1. Reset to default grub flags - regenerate grub.
  2. Reinstall NON-FREE BUMBLEBEE profile.
  3. Reboot.
Don’t touch ACPI OSI anymore cause in 2019 it is not needed at all. Issue is in bumbebee handle sometimes.

#5

@FadeMind System will not boot (it freezes before login screen) if I don’t specify acpi_osi. How is that optional?

#6

Each Vendor have own magic combination for OSI setup. Sometimes acpi_osi is needed. For example for my device I don’t need to.

Simply restore:

acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009"

and paste results of

xinput --list

For figure out whats happen here.

if your dont want to use the nvidia gpu at all, and if you have the option in bios to disable it (some do, some dont). given you have that option, disable it and use video-linux or if only the intel can be diabled, use video-nvidia. this may easily fix both and not need acpi parameters to boot. just an idea.

#9

Wrong idea! I don’t know WHY guys talking about DISABLING eGPU, when just IT IS DISABLED in default via bbswitch + bumblebee setup = MHWD care of it.

#10

probably because some care more about extending battery life and less about graphics performance. also because bumblebee works great on some/most systems and poorly or not at all on others.
myself, im less concerned about battery life and use prime because it performs better than the other options. its all preference of the user in the end, i was just presenting an option to the OP

#11

No option in bios unfortunately  About the xinput - I’ve tried everything to make it work. There are many reports from users in the same situation as mine, stating that acpi_osi options disable touchpad completely. As soon as I use video-linux driver without bumblebee and without acpi_osi options, touchpad gets properly recognized as ELAN1200 touchpad. But then again - video-linux driver doesn’t power off discrete gpu properly and I get half of battery life.

#12

is that output while using bumblebee or while using nouveau(video-linux)?

#13

can you show output of xrandr --listproviders ?

#14

Bumblebee. When I use video-linux there is ELAN1200 instead of
ITE Tech. Inc. ITE Device(8910)

xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x48 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 5 associated providers: 0 name:Intel
  • that’s on bumblebee again

#15

sorry. I meant the output if you’re not using bumblebee (and get only half of battery life)

edit:
but dont switch back to that, first try to fix with bumblebee
