Open windows after boot

Hi there,

I have a weird and annoying issue with my manjaro install.

It seems like there are a lot of windows open when I am starting my computer. “Konversations” i.e. and then also randomly others, mostly programs which have been open while shutting down. But not all of them and I fail to find a pattern in it.

I am not sure which information is needed in order to find the problem so here the usual:

  • Asuming you are running the KDE version of manjaro.
    (Backed-up by your profile info)

Because i’m not using KDE i’m unable to pinpoint you to the section in your settings, but there is an entry where you can select to start with a fresh session at login.
It’s default is to save the session IIRC…

You are assuming right =)

I am sorry to be so uniformed but what qualifies as a session? I typed that into the manjaro wiki but it didn’t come up with anything. I don’t get it.

also i always close the “conversations” window and it opens up every time and others don’t I fail to find any consistency in it.

Try the application menu or krunner or system settings

That kind will be in your auto startup applications settings, again can’t pin-point the exact setting name or location.

Every login into the GUI (or terminal) is qualified as a session.

Do you mean I should try to type “application menu”, “krunner” or “system settings” into the manjaro-wiki search bar? Because I just did that and its futile. for krunner there are no results and the other ones give me to many unrelated (hundreds).
What is the definition of a session in manjaro? can you please provide me with a link or an explanation? It would be most welcomed

No you could try to type that at your application menu’s search bar
(Eg. the menu you use to find applications to start)

That term is used in all Linux variants and mostly refers to a “Login session”, maybe your translator does a better job when you try that phrase :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Ok I will look for it thank you.

Ok check, that brings me closer to an answer

Krunner
yes that was the first thing I did, but krunner doesn’t seem to be of any help, if I understand it correctly it is some sort of mini terminal and not connected to which windows are opened after booting? I might be wrong since i didn’t use it all so far (I might look into it, for some reason it doesn’t start when I press F2)

system settings
I looked of course into my system settings and found the settings called “autostart” where I could add applications which (if I understood this correctly) would start applications automatically, but it is completely empty, no entry.

applications menu
If I type this into my applications menu search bar (super-key) I find stuff which is unfortunately unrelated to the applications starting without any sense problem I am having

so you are saying that my login session are basically never ended?

If your session is saved at logout/reboot/etc then it is restored to last state.
Thats why i said:

Open the “system settings”.
In the search bar of system settings window type session. In results you will get Desktop Session under Workspace category.
Then click on Desktop Session, in there click on “Start with an Empty Session”.
From now, on boot or new login, non of the previously open apps will open.

Thanks @terra9, it’s so hard to guide people when you use a different system :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
You pin-pointed it :+1:

Thank you a lot, but I typed sessions in the search bar from my system settings no results at all also after looking into the workspace category I couldn’t find anything.

I tried to change the system language into English, in the hope of maybe being able to follow your approach but it didn’t work and it remained in German. I don’t know what i did wrong.

In the German version you have to look in App Systemeinstellungen

Arbeitsbereich -> Starten und Beenden -> Arbeitsflächen-Sitzung

and then click on

Mit leerer Sitzung starten

This is a practical example of why i posted:

:face_with_hand_over_mouth:

It’s not that I don’t understand English I speak it since I’ve been 12 years old but the system settings can be confusing. I don’t write this because I feel offended or something (lol) it’s just that the issue is especially with system settings or internal stuff you know?
