Nvidia situation for Maxwell and Pascal GPUs

Hi, I’m not great at this, so with a Pascal card from a fresh install:

-Install but do not update

-use n-d-a to point to correct driver

-follow what n-d-a suggests

(1.)?am I ok to update then, does it lock in the legacy driver, or do I have to be careful not to update the Nvidia driver & tools?

Alternatively, can I:

-fresh install, no update

-use the 570 dkms driver in extra

(2.)pretty sure that I’d have to be careful and not update Nvidia stuff at this point, or is there a way to freeze it on 570?

(3.)Also, what is the difference between *nvidia and *nvidia-open drivers?

Thanks and thank you everybody who works so hard on Manjaro!

For a fresh install I would suggest:

  1. Select the free/open-source driver to boot the Live ISO

  2. Install OS and reboot system

  3. Update installed packages:

    pamac update

  4. Install legacy driver with Manjaro Hardware Detection CLI tool:

    sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-575xx

Or Manjaro Settings Manager - Hardware Detection GUI tool

    manjaro-settings-manager -m msm_mhwd

A post was split to a new topic: Nvidia GTX 1050Ti - Installing legacy drivers

Hello everyone.

So, the situation is pretty much the same. The 580xx drivers were replaced by 590xx, and the Manjaro team created mhwd to help choose the correct driver. In my case, if I had to choose, I would use 575xx, even knowing that Wayland support is better on 580xx and newer. I use GNOME, so proper Wayland support is essential for me. The 575xx drivers can use Wayland, but support is better in newer versions.

I don’t have the patience anymore to deal with Nvidia issues on Linux. Even using Manjaro, I end up spending too much time every time something changes and I have to intervene.

So, I bought an AMD GPU, especially because RAM prices are going up this year.
If anyone needs help changing GPUs (for example, moving from Nvidia to AMD), this topic might be helpful:

If the staff team wants to keep this topic to help others, that’s fine by me. If they want to close it, that’s no problem either. My issue is solved, I’m using an AMD GPU now.
