NVIDIA Prime setup errors

nvidia
prime

#1

So I was using the defult setup that came with installation but after having an issue with suspending the laptop it was suggested to me to configure Nvidia Prime in this post. In short this didn’t fix the issue and i am still unable to suspened the laptop. and now i have some flickering when playing videos on full screen and using the volume or coming out of full screen. Note that i tried this way of installing prime also.

But today when booting up the faced a black screen, tried ctl-alt-bksp didn’t work from terminal startx gave me an error below is the log. After 10 mins all the sudden X11 booted up out of nowwhere.

My question here is wrong with my setup ? why do i keep getting glitches ?

I can’t comment on the suspend, I never use it, it’s always seemed like a problematic feature to me…i.e it works for a while, then for no reason stops working.

As for identifying the issue. One thing to try is to look at the system log for the weird boot. First you are going to have to find that boot lot. Running:

journalctl --list-boots

Will display all boot logs, identify the that was the issue, and run:

journalctl -b 4d3268aaadf8491b9526f2601cb3d514

Using whatever was the ID of the problem boot. If you remember the time when X finally came up that would be best, scroll to that time in the log and look for some sort of timeout message or error message that might help you identify what is causing the issue. If you don’t know the time then you can search for “logind” by typing “/logind”. That should show you when you logged in, you’ll see something like:

systemd-logind[356]: New session c1 of user lightdm

You can then scroll back in the log with “b” and try to identify the issue.

If you haven’t reboot since the issue or it happens again you might try running:

systemd-analyze critical-chain

That gives times for the various services hopefully one of them will be LONG, then we can narrow down what that service was doing for it to take so long.

#3

That would kill a running Xorg session. If you’re at a text terminal, you’re not in an Xorg session.

Current version is 4.15.14. Update your system:

sudo pacman-mirrors -f 3
sudo pacman -Syyu

Have you changed some BIOS setting to disable the iGPU? i.e. are you sure you’re running in a hybrid graphics mode?

#4

can you show output of:

# !adjust XRANDR_FILE to the correct one!

LXORGLOG=$(ls -lt --time-style="+%Y%m%d" ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.*|head -n 1) VXORGLOG=$(ls -lt --time-style="+%Y%m%d" /var/log/Xorg.*|head -n 1) XRANDR_FILE=/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/99-xrandr-prime.sh XORGLOGFILE=$(if [ $(awk '{print $6}' <<< $LXORGLOG) -gt $(awk '{print $6}' <<< $VXORGLOG) ]; then echo $(awk '{print $7}' <<<$LXORGLOG); else echo $(awk '{print $7}' <<<$VXORGLOG);fi) && for i in /etc/modules-load.d/* /etc/modprobe.d/* /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* $XORGLOGFILE $XRANDR_FILE; do printf "\n\n$i:\n\n%s\n\n" "$(cat $i)"; done

Sooo… you’ve installed the 340 series (legacy) driver for one kernel but not the other? Why didn’t you install the 390 series?

You have to install a driver module for the linux415 kernel.

#9

Not sure to be honest on why I have installed 390 but I’ll try to do that after I am able to boot. After I did the update I’m not able to boot as the attached photo :frowning:

#10

Install the correct driver extramodule package then run update-grub so you have a working boot image.

You’ll probably have to do this using a chroot seeing as you ignored the error message and rebooted without a working boot image.

#11

I don’t think this is something ill be able to do at my level of Linux, I think ill just do a fresh install. Do you have any recommendations when doing the fresh install ?

#12

I’m not sure what you want to hear… I recommend you install Manjaro in a way you feel comfortable? And then either not mess around with stuff until you understand what it does, or use each “breakage” as a learning experience and be prepared to reinstall?

#13

That’s what I’m doing to learn, so I’ll do a fresh install any recommendations I meant regarding the prime setup from the start should I set it up before installing or after or maybe you have a better adivce ? I’m just looking to learn all the ins and outs of Linux with Manjaro

#14

Oh. Then install with the non-free drivers, and, if you want PRIME, read carefully and follow the instructions in the thread.
