NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 not starting on Dell G5 laptop

#1

Hello, all. :slightly_smiling_face:

So, straight to the point: although my NVIDIA graphics card is recognised by bumblebee, it refuses to run. I have searched the Net and spent considerable time in hopes of solving this issue, to no avail. Now, I turn to the community.

  1. I will post my specs and printouts that I think might help out.
  2. Then, I will post which solutions did not work for me. I will link and paste them here. [sudo applied in commands where necessary, left out here].
  3. Finally, I will list two solutions I did not try, and tell my reasoning behind why I did not try those.

Right now I reverted all the changes, as none of them did the trick. Details below. Let me know if I can add more info.

Note: as my account is new, I cannot post more than one link. Thus, here is a Teknik paste link, I marked the links in this post and You can follow them from here. Don’t worry, all relevant info is pasted in the post (and sorry for the inconvenience!):

Bumblebee doesn’t work and screenfetch can’t find my GPU [link 01]:

Summary
Uninstalled bbswitch;
Uninstalled bumblebee;
Reboot;
(after the reboot, I could already see my GPU on the screenfetch output)
Installed bbswitch by package manager (using 4.19 kernel and I can verify that it did not work on 4.14);
Installed bumblebee as per this post; [see just beneath]

1. Install bumblebee for nonfree nvidia. Please run in terminal command in proper order:

sudo pacman -S virtualgl lib32-virtualgl lib32-primus primus

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-bumblebee

sudo systemctl enable bumblebeed

2. Reboot system:

sudo reboot

3. Next run:

optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8

4. Verify it is working

primusrun glxspheres64

#1 [SOLVED] Dell XPS 9570 bbswitch not working, Nvdia won’t power off/on [link 03]:

Summary

SOLVED(kinda): I ditched Bumblebee in favor of nvidia-xrun. nvidia-xrun also utilizes bbswitch so I installed a fork of nvidia-xrun made by michelesr that uses kernel power management instead of bbswitch. Here is the full process:

LazyLucretia wrote:

Alright I gave nvidia-xrun a shot and it seems like a good solution until bumblebee is fixed for this model. Here is what I did:

  • Removed pcie_port_pm=off from kernel parameters (I think this parameter defaults to β€˜on’ when not supplied to kernel)
  • Uninstalled bumblebee(or bumblebee-forceunload) and bbswitch if they are installed.
  • Installed michelesr fork of nvidia-xrun using the PKGBUILD: https://paste.pound-python.org/show/Uax … Ve5U11ixm/ (as suggested by setzer22), this should also install nvidia drivers as dependencies.
  • Installed xf86-video-intel driver.
  • Create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-noautogpu.conf, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf and /etc/tmpfiles.d/nvidia_pm.conf as suggested above by yaworski.
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-noautogpu.conf :
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddGPU" "off"

EndSection

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf :

Section β€œDevice”
Identifier β€œIntel Graphics”
Driver β€œintel”
EndSection

/etc/tmpfiles.d/nvidia_pm.conf :

w /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control - - - - auto

- Now since bumblebee is uninstalled, /usr/lib/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf file is also gone but we need it to stop nvidia drivers from loading at boot. Create /usr/lib/modprobe.d/bumblebee.conf with following contents:

blacklist nvidia
blacklist nvidia-drm
blacklist nvidia-modeset
blacklist nvidia-uvm
blacklist nouveau

- Reboot.
Now nvidia or nouveau modules should not be loaded on boot and Nvidia dGPU should be off. Loaded modules can be checked with 'lsmod | less' and power usage of dGPU and other system components can be checked with powertop. Power drain while idling should be below 10 Watts. Mine is around 4 W.
In order to use dGPU:
- Switch to another tty with Ctrl+Alt+F2 or another F key.
- Run 'nvidia-xrun <application>' and enter your password. I recommend installing a basic window manager such as openbox and running 'nvidia-xrun openbox' to be able to run and switch between apps in the same tty.
- In my case, when I try to run nvidia-xrun first time after boot, it throws some errors and quits after a few seconds. Run it again, it should work this time.
- When done, quit the applicatin. After entering root password for another time, it should unload modules and switch off the card.
- Exit tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1 or some other F key. Switching between tty's is also possible while nvidia-xrun is running.)

[I only have a photo of the result from the second tty:

#2 [SOLVED] Dell XPS 9570 bbswitch not working, Nvdia won’t power off/on [link 04]:

Summary

I can confirm the exact same problem happens on the new Dell G5 15 laptop. I was able to fix the issue by following the suggestions in this thread. Now I can use optirun/primusrun/nvidia-xrun and the nvidia card will get stopped when it’s not necessary anymore. I’ll leave a summary of the steps I followed because it took me a while to figure them out by just reading the thread.

I’ve found a way to prevent Xorg from loading nvidia module on boot. I’ve created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-noautogpu.conf file with

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddGPU" "off"

EndSection

Then the iGPU needs to be added manually. I've created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file with:

Section β€œDevice”
Identifier β€œIntel Graphics”
Driver β€œintel”
EndSection

I've tested this multiple times and now the nvidia module is not loaded by the Xorg at all.

I don't use bbswitch. Instead I've created /etc/tmpfiles.d/nvidia_pm.conf file with:

w /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control - - - - auto

This switches on the kernel power management for the NVidia card. It depends on whether the nvidia module is loaded or not. The bumblebee loads the module, turning on the card when the optirun/primusrun is executed, but unfortunately it doesn't even try to unload it if bbswitch is not installed. But after manually unloading the module, the card turns off. The card is turned off after boot by default.

primus: fatal: Bumblebee daemon reported: error: Could not load GPU driver [link 05]:
Tried both of the proposed solutions (see beneath), they didn’t work:

Summary

I solved changing some lines in file /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf : (In my case I’m using the version 352 of nvidia driver, change this value by your driver version)

  1. KernelDriver=nvidia-current to KernelDriver=nvidia-352
  2. LibraryPath=/usr/lib/nvidia-current:/usr/lib32/nvidia-current to LibraryPath=/usr/lib/nvidia-352:/usr/lib32/nvidia-352
  3. XorgModulePath=/usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg,/usr/lib/xorg/modules to XorgModulePath=/usr/lib/nvidia-352/xorg,/usr/lib/xorg/modules

After that restart the system or restart the bumblebee service with:

sudo systemctl restart bumblebeed.service

To check the service status:

sudo systemctl status bumblebeed.service

Summary

new update: as I thought, changing just one line in /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf actually worked out: I got everything working perfectly on updated LMDE 201403 (debian jessie based) by just adding some code to KernelDriver line. Before editing, it was like:

KernelDriver=nvidia

I just added -current to it. This is line now:

KernelDriver=nvidia-current

Now works fine with primusrun glxgears and optirun glxgears . Haven’t checked with anything else, have no time currently. Hope this helped, cheers. :smiley:

EDIT: Reason why bumblebee fails and β€œcannot find driver” is because of incorrect paths to nvidia driver libraries. What I do right now to make bumblebee work with any driver version I wish is changing following lines in /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf file:

  1. line 22: Driver=nvidia
  2. line 55: KernelDriver=nvidia-_version_ , i.e. nvidia-352
  3. lines 58, 61: these lines contain paths to nvidia libraries and xorg modules. Paths probably start with /usr/lib/nvidia , /usr/lib32/nvidia , or /usr/lib/xorg . You should replace nvidia with nvidia-_version_ , i.e. /usr/lib/nvidia-352 . Pay attention: each line contains 2 paths, separated by colon or by comma. You should make changes to each path (DO NOT edit path that starts with /usr/lib/xorg ).

Note that if you want to use default drivers, _version_ should be current , i.e. line 52: KernelDriver=nvidia-current . I think that bumblebee comes preconfigured to use nvidia-current when package bumblebee-nvidia is installed ( sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia ).

If done correctly, bumblebee should not report error finding drivers - this worked for me with numerous driver versions.

  1. What I didn’t try and why:

[ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU: No devices detected [link 06]:
Because I don’t know how to do all these steps.

Modprobe Error: β€œCould not insert β€˜nvidia’: No such device” on linux >=4.8 [link 07]
Because I don’t know how to edit kernel parameters.

Also, I rather not tinker with the β€œdeep stuff” until I’m sure what the problem is.

I tried my best to condense all this info and avoid the post being a mess… I’m not sure if I succeeded. :sweat_smile: This is my first post, I will make changes as requested if I missed any guidelines.

Any help appreciated - I would really like to make the second GPU running!

Thank you for the detailed post. Well I’m far from all knowing but my suggestions on this topic would be:

You could try and use PRIME instead of bumblebee, see this tutorial with proprietary driver:

Or for the free driver see here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME

Another alternative might be the Optimus Manager

i know you mentioned that you did add your user to the bumblebee group, but that says otherwise afaik. also im not sure how important it is to add user before enabling bumblebeed but for the sake of being sure, try the following.
sudo systemctl stop bumblebeed
sudo systemctl disable bumblebeed
sudo gpasswd -a $USER bumblebee
sudo gpasswd -a $USER video
sudo systemctl enable bumblebeed
sudo systemctl start bumblebeed

and btw, great job on the level of detail included, especially being your first post. :+1:

Thanks! :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, I notice my mistake. I gave the wrong output because I’ve reset everything to the way it was (including removing myself from the group). I re-added myself and the output is now like this:

optirun glxgears:

[ 630.874065] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not enable discrete graphics card

[ 630.874135] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.

(I have updated the OP to reflect this.)

I have tried the list of commands You suggested, but sadly there is no change.

#5

try primusrun, i believe it installs with bumblebee, if not sudo pacman -S primus
primusrun glxgears

afaik primusrun is the successor to optirun

#6

Yes, it was installed with bumblebee. The outputs for both glxgears and glxspheres64 are in the OP. To me it seems that everything, and I mean everything is in order except one fatal thing: the card doesn’t load. Bumblebee is running, the card is recognised. But I might be wrong, since this is out of the scope of my understanding.

#7

did you try the primusrun command instead of optirun and get same result?
if yes, i found a solution to your exact error, it involves tlp interfering with nvidia. i think this should take care of the issue.

Use lspci to identify the PCI slot information associated with the discrete GPU.
Example: lspci | grep β€œNVIDIA” | cut -b -8 will show only the PCI slot information associated with the NVIDIA card.

Copy the PCI slot information, open the /etc/default/tlp with any text editor with sudo permission. Append the arguments of RUNTIME_PM_BLACKLIST with the copied PCI slot information. Save the file, exit and reboot.
Example: sudo nano /etc/default/tlp
Note: RUNTIME_PM_BLACKLIST must be uncommented(remove # before it) if it is not already.

in terminal:
lspci | grep β€œNVIDIA” | cut -b -8
you should get an output similar to 02:00.0
then:
sudo nano /etc/default/tlp
find the line
#RUNTIME_PM_BLACKLIST=β€œbb:dd.f 11:22.3 44:55.6”
and make it look like this:
RUNTIME_PM_BLACKLIST=β€œ02:00.0”
change the 02:00.0 to the first command’s output and then save. you may have to reboot after

dont forget to remove the # at the beginning of the line

Yes, I did. In the meantime however, I did as suggested in the first reply. That very complicated solution has worked (see my following reply), thus I will keep things as they are. In the future, when I possibly reinstall the system, I will try out Your suggestion as well, since it is much easier (if it only works). If and when I do, I will report back here if I can.

Thank You for Your time and expertise, I highly appreciate it! :wink:

good, glad to hear you got it working. in my less than seasoned opinion, prime is the best and easiest way to go. better performance, no need for opti/primus/bbswitch, and it just works.

Indeed it does. :sunglasses: I will not go into detail just how satisfied I am with its performance, suffice to say that it was worth the trouble.

@mozzribo , dude can u tell me exactly the steps to install Prime , because i have the same laptop as you do with updated Bios (which i think is the problem). I mention that i am newbie on linux. I have done exactly what u did with bumblebee and nothing seems to work !!

#13

theres a link to the prime tutorial posted above, and since your new and this actually happened to someone before, please do notice that there are drop downs in that tutorial that look like " >" that contain the contents to put in each of those files specified. also, when you get step 5 only follow the directions that go with your display manager (kde uses sddm, gnome uses gdm, if your not sure, check) and dont rush, make sure you do each and every thing exactly as instructed and you’ll do fine

I did everything as the tutorial said and I can’t boot in Manjaro… Any suggestions?

#16

yes, i would say start a new thread but as it is there are too many that are nvidia related and another is only going to make it harder for someone else to decide which to follow.
do this:
-grab the manjaro live usb you created (make another if you dont have it)
-boot to live desktop on usb and connect to your network
-then, open a browser and come back here and i’ll work through it with you.
-let me know when youve done this

#17

I ve done it, i am ready

#18

open a terminal and input:
manjaro-chroot -a
that should put you into a comand prompt of the manjaro you already have installed like this:

==> Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/sdb2]
--> mount: [/mnt]
--> mount: [/mnt/boot/efi]
[dglt-6 /]#

then post output for:
mhwd -li
inxi -F

dont forget to put 3 backtics ``` before and after each output when posting it here so its formatted properly
