Nvidia driver desktop taking ages to load

I have a GT 710 (my spare backup card) running on a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R mobo, X5560 CPU.
I have a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 12GB ram.
I am also dual booting with Windows 10 with linux + swap in a extended partition

Trying KDE (fresh install) I get a super long load time till the desktop appears.
If I cycle between screens 'Ctrl-Alt-F2' etc the desktop will appear fairly quickly but if left will take ages to load, the last load left alone took 7 minutes until the KDE desktop appeared.

This happens on the video-nvidia driver and the 390 driver trying the 390 and reverting to the video-nvidia seemed to make the load longer.
The video-linux driver by itself loads the desktop fairly quickly.

Trying the Deepin spin I get the same thing with the long black screen until desktop though Deepin shows the desktop much quicker the KDE.

I looked at the Nvidia driver page and the GT 710 is listed in the latest driver so the graphics card is compatible just its not booting fast for some reason.

My log from boot to when the desktop started showing is as follows:
You can see the 6 minute gap near the end which is what is happenging.

I have tried:
Fresh install KDE free + nonfree
Fresh install Deepin nonfree
Changed drivers in the system.
I will try Gnome sometime and see.

It appears to do it on the nvidia driver.

Windows 10 on this system auto installed the graphics driver, loads quick and seems to run fine.
Typing this I seem to be getting input lag.

So any advice?

Do you have any reason to suspect this is coming from nvidia? Or is that just a guess?

Here is a good way to get/share system info:

Considering it seems to only do it on the video-nvidia driver and not the video-linux driver which loads up fairly quick leads me to suspect it is a graphical thing.

When I disabled quiet boot to show the verbose output the system would stall on "Started TLP system startup/shutdown" which from looking lead me to find various driver related issues on this forum but non were relevant as I eventually could load and speed it up by switching screens which I assume was forcing a (normal function) kwin display manager reset from the KDE notification.

Also to add I tried all video ports on the graphics card with the same result.

I will later test my GTX 1070 on here from my main i7 970k rig and see if the black screen continues.

Strange I removed video-nvidia and had just video-linux and it still had the black screen hang.
I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F2 and the desktop instantly came up.

Any ideas as this is strange?

Possibly entropy.

What happens if you create input by typing keys and moving mouse (dont switch, just make noise) ?

If that works then it probably is entropy.

Do you have haveged installed and enabled ?

I just found a post about it and seemed to do the trick installing it even with the nvidia driver.
I will need to look up what entropy is and why it happens.
Seems haveged isn't a default install thing.

I think it is installed by default, but not enabled.

Basically in order to create randomness and general noise.

The system relies on this in a number of ways, like encryption/decryption.

A lot of hardware does this on its own in one way or another.

But if it does not then we install/enable haveged which will do it for you on the software side.

Always be up to date before installing stuff:
sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syyu

Install haveged:
sudo pacman -S haveged

Enable the service (and start it):
systemctl enable haveged --now

@moson I think you might be right that it is included in most ISOs by default, but not enabled.
Considering it isnt too big, and can be required, I think this is a fair scenario.

I'm wondering what is exhausting the entry pool that much and why it's using the blocking /dev/random instead of urandom (i can understand for crypto you'd want this but for everything else PRNGs should do fine). Those posts are seen quite often here. A bit strange.

True enough.
I have no idea how to go about getting more info on it though  ..

Wait, where did you get this from:

I had just assumed entropy wasnt being created, or not in a way that the kernel knows .. ie not the right fan sensor, no firmware to do it, blah.

When you request data from /dev/random your entry pool goes down and it blocks when there is not enough random data to be provided (which is generated by mouse, keyboard events, irq's and whatnot, so something which is truly random, more or less). You can try this by doing cat /dev/random, it'll spit out some random data and stop for a while until enough entropy is available in order to create more random data.

/dev/urandom (PRNG) although, always spits out data regardless if the entry pool is exhausted or not. it just runs some computation to generate "random" data, thus pseudo random.

I did some reading last night and understand the situation a bit more now.
Yea seems like something that probably should be looked into by Manjaro as after knowing about the Entropy I found quite a few threads I never saw before about it.

This thread is pretty much solved and will mark as such but the discussion about this is something that needs to happen due to amount of instances I have seen just briefly browsing so one if you with more knowledge can start a proper discussion and feedback thread on it.

It isn't just the SDDM display manager (though that was worst for me) but also LightDM has the issue on Deepin etc.

It's not really a manjaro specific issue though. You'll find that in other distros as well.

Seems something was changed in kernel versions 4.16 and later which blocks urandom read:
