Nvidia dependency - help a noob out

could not satisfy dependencies:

  • unable to satisfy dependency ‘nvidia-430xx-utils=430.64’ required by linux419-nvidia-430xx

I’m so bad at this stuff. Update today

Can you provide the full output and the output of inxi -Fza?

had to take out some links there as not allowed to post them

Could you edit the post, select the output of inxi and press the </> button on the toolbar?

And what do you do to get this error, and what’s the full output?

I’m trying to install latest updates from pacman (also tried it from terminal)

I get this -

Failed to prepare dependencies
conflicting dependencies:

  • nvidia-450xx-utils and nvidia-430xx-utils are in conflict

unable to satisfy dependency ‘nvidia-430xx-utils=430.64’ required by linux419-nvidia-430xx
removing nvidia-430xx-utils breaks dependency ‘nvidia-430xx-utils’ required by lib32-nvidia-430xx-utils

When you have this kind of error it is actually not a real ‘error’, it is because another package forbids the removal of another one, so you need to find the culprit.

Package from memory that could do that to your nvidia drivers are the metapackages like linux-latest or linux-lts, but it can also be an application like Cuda, NvidiaSystem Monitor, and so on.

Please post the full terminal output from your initial command to the error you get (and please, click the </> button then paste your terminal output in the preformated block the button creates).

PS: pacman is the terminal tool, the GUI tool you’re probably talking about is called Pamac, not Pacman

Yes Pamac sorry.

This is what I get if I use sudo pacman -Syu

You didn’t paste properly, only your first line is properly formatted. Anyway, did yo ucheck what I said? Do you have one of the application I listed installed on your system?

linux-latest
linux-lts
cuda
nvidia-system-monitor

Sorry i cant get the hang of it.

I know I have CUDA, is there a command I can use to search for the others?

Ok. Do you need CUDA? I mean do you use it for anything special?

  • If yes, then uninstall it first, then start update again, then reinstall it.
  • If no, do the same but do not reinstall it.

Huge majority of people do not need CUDA at all. I’m a hardcore gamer and do not use it at all if you wonder if you require it for games.

:video_game:

Ahh ok i’ll try that.

Yup I need CUDA, i do a little gaming but do 3D modeling mainly so it’s necessary for me.

ooooh it worked as far as the updates go.

when trying to re-install CUDA it said

Warning: removing nvidia-430xx-utils breaks dependency 'nvidia-430xx-utils' required by lib32-nvidia-430xx-utils
Add lib32-nvidia-430xx-utils to remove
Warning: removing nvidia-430xx-utils breaks dependency 'nvidia-430xx-utils=430.64' required by linux419-nvidia-430xx
Add linux419-nvidia-430xx to remove

it’s still downloading it though

Welp.

It broke.

After restart I get this error

“Failed to start light display manager”

I’m on my phone

It shouldn’t have break anything if you only removed CUDA, updated the system.
I’ll try to see the forum for more info about your issue, it is maybe unrelated to your action and is something in the update but that is weird.

What happened then before you reboot (didn’t ask you to reboot by the way)?
Did update finish successfully?
Did you successfully reinstall CUDA?

Yeah as far as I can tell it all went fine.

I guess it’s time for a fresh install perhaps? Good job I keep my important stuff on a separate hard drive

No you’ll get on track sooner than you think, It is probably a minor issue I think (OK it is big issue for you right now you can’t use PC lol).

You can access a terminal from your non working computer with CTRL+ALT+F2 this will switch you to another TTY where you can login and type commands (and from TTY you do ALT+F1 to get back to desktop/broken computer).

Wait a little for someone to jump in or that I find some more info for you.

EDIT in the mean time can you check if video drivers are properly installed, maybe try to reinstall them from TTY?

To list installed drivers:
mhwd -li
