Not waking up from sleep - how to troubleshoot help request

Hi,
For the last few months my system has intermittently failed to wake back up from sleep. It doesn’t do it all the time but it is more like a 50/50 change if it’ll get stuck or not.
I quite like the setup i have, so am reluctant to wipe/reinstall.
If anyone could suggest what log files might be worth looking at (or any help on where to start) i’d be very grateful for some guidance.
thanks,
Paul.

did you try different kernels to see if it happens also with them?

Hi, thanks for replying! output from Inxi below.

I normally stay fairly up to date with the latest kernel. When it first started happening I remember using the Manjaro Settings Manager to remove the kernel i was using at that time, and went back to an LTS kernel instead, but as the issue persisted, I assumed it wasn’t a new kernel to blame and went back to a newer kernel.

just to test though, I’m going to go linux419 just to see if this makes a difference.

Probably unrelated, but i noticed the below in the dialogue box after installing linux419.

Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.14-x86_64
Found initrd image: /boot/intel-ucode.img /boot/initramfs-5.14-x86_64.img
Found initrd fallback image: /boot/initramfs-5.14-x86_64-fallback.img
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-5.13-x86_64
Found initrd image: /boot/intel-ucode.img /boot/initramfs-5.13-x86_64.img

linux513 and linux514 don’t appear on the list in Manjaro Settings Manager, so I can’t remove them from there, but they do make an appearance in Grub. I think this’ll be unrelated to my issue but thought i’d mention it anyway, in case.

You might still have residual .preset files for older kernels under /etc/mkinitcpio.d/

Standby/Suspend

journalctl --boot -1 | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Suspend/,/Finished.+Suspend/p"

Sleep/Hibernate

journalctl --boot -1 | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Hibernate/,/Finished.+Hibernate/p"

Here you can get a list of all boots with date and time:

journalctl --list-boots --no-pager

Then you can target the correct boot number (0, -1, -2, -3 etc.)

so. left the machine on last night and just shut the lid while running the oldest LTS kernel:

    ~  mhwd-kernel -li                                                  ✔
Currently running: 4.19.248-1-MANJARO (linux419)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux419
   * linux515

and the issue occurred again. Paying more attention this time i realised that the wifi LED was on, the drive activity LED flashed occasionally and the LED around the power button was on, all indicating it was actually on but with a completely black screen.

I also successfully SSH’d into it from another machine and was able to make it do a clean reboot. On previous occasions i’d just held in the power button for 5.

Big thanks to @megavolt who’s sugestion has given me this, with some definite errors of

   ~  journalctl --boot -1 | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Suspend/,/Finished.+Suspend/p"                                                            ✔

So as I see here… The event was blocked by the ACPI, so the firmware, for some unknown reason. Maybe just an idea, but here:

It seems to stay Lid opend … I cannot see anywhere Lid closed… maybe the problem here is that the hardware button doesn’t report linux that it is closed, but only opened?

Can you try suspending without closing the lid?

systemctl suspend

interesting.

Just done that. am currently running LTS kernel 5.15.48-1-MANJARO (in case relevant) and just suspended the system as sugested with systemctl.

It seemed to fully suspend with only the power button LED slowly pulsing. there was no response to keyboard presses. it did attempt to resume when i pressed the power button. it then had the wifi led lit, disk activity led gave the occasional blink and the power LED was solid again, but a black screen. had to hold the power button for 5 again.

journalctl --boot -1 | sed -n -r "/Starting.+Suspend/,/Finished.+Suspend/p"

the lid remained open the whole time

Soo suspend actually works as expected and the logs (when I compare it with my old Lenovo G50), then everything is correct. Only difference is: You use wayland and here Xorg is used.

So if it is only the screen, then I would look for a problem with wayland/xorg or the gpu driver.

before Manjaro was a thing i remember having nightmares with an old Ubuntu install trying to fix some sort of graphics or Xorg server issue. Whilst I didn’t learn much about Xorg, i did learn i was hopelessly out of my depth :laughing: :grin: :rofl:

am thinking maybe try an alternative driver. i don’t use this machine for gaming or work so having a video driver that may not be the best one available, isn’t really a concern for me.
looking on the Configure_Graphics_Cards page of the Manjaro wiki (it wouldn’t let me link it here), i had only the intel “video-linux” driver installed.

i done a quick sudo mhwd -i pci video-vesa to add the “video-vesa”
and now i have both

$ mhwd -l -d

Warning: no configs for USB devices found!

i’ve rebooted but it looks like the “video-linux” driver is still in use

$ lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'                            ✔
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 21fa
	Kernel driver in use: i915
	Kernel modules: i915

any idea how to make it use the “video-vesa” driver???

appreciate all the help, btw.

video-vesa only works in xorg. When installed it should create a config here: /etc/X11/mhwd.d/vesa.conf' and link it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf for activation. Only thing you need to do is switching to xorg.
