No sound, Manjaro testing, NVIDIA, HDMI

Hello all,

I switched a couple of times between the branches testing and stable as per the Wiki.

I did overwrite some files that seemed related to alsa when downgrading (testing -> stable) the first time. Sound used to be working, not anymore :astonished:

aplay -l:

At some point, I tried unloading/reloading the related sound driver rmmod / moddprobe while monitoring the output, and this is the log I managed to capture:

journalctl -f

# In separate terminal
rmmod snd_hda_intel
modprobe snd_hda_intel

Output:

So definitely something here.

fuser -v /dev/snd/*

                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/seq: argo 1706 F.... pipewire

Not sure what this one does or means.

I am at a loss.

So, as it turns out, part of the issue is related to this:

Indeed, /usr/share/alsa-card-profile/mixer/profile-sets/ for some reason was almost empty: it only contained audigy.conf , owned by the package alsa-card-profiles .

Reinstalling the package alsa-card-profiles and restarting pulseaudio solved the issue.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=246043

That being said, I have been able to restore sound, but things are still a bit unstable. Pulseaudio has crashed a couple of times on me before I was able to actually play something.

Issue partially fixed. Leaving here for reference.

The journal is showing the analog audio jacks get detected OK
so audio devices might possibly be working OK in just ALSA

but then there is a segfault from pipewire

Oct 29 14:39:46 linux-main kernel: pipewire-media-[1714]: segfault at 50 ip 00007f714c9a4590 sp 00007ffe47524298 error 4 in libpipewire-0.3.so.0.313.0[7f714c972000+3f000]

and then module_alsa_card for Analog audio (card 0) fails to load in Pulseaudio

Oct 29 14:39:46 linux-main pulseaudio[1990]: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="0" name="pci-0000_00_1f.3" card_name="alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3" namereg_fail=false tsched=yes fixed_latency_range=no ignore_dB=no deferred_volume=yes use_ucm=yes avoid_resampling=no card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed.

then pipewire-media has a core dump

and module_alsa_card for HDMI audio (card 1) also fails to load in Pulseaudio

Oct 29 14:39:48 linux-main pulseaudio[1990]: Failed to find a working profile.
Oct 29 14:39:48 linux-main pulseaudio[1990]: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="1" name="pci-0000_01_00.1" card_name="alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1" namereg_fail=false tsched=yes fixed_latency_range=no ignore_dB=no deferred_volume=yes use_ucm=yes avoid_resampling=no card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed.

so it looks like pipewire is crashing PulseAudio

suggest maybe double-check the systemd services for both audio servers

systemctl --user -l --no-pager status pipewire.{socket|service}
systemctl --user -l --no-pager status pulseaudio.{socket|service}

but I would suggest either to stop and/or disable pipewire socket and service so that PulseAudio can work normally, or uninstall it

As far as i know there is a beta version of pipewire that works instead of JACK but the only evidence of it I have seen is a few screenshots. I do not think it is working instead of PulseAudio

Hello all,

I have the same problem after upgrading to Linux kernel 510, the speaker does not sound out. When I downgrade the kernel to 59 it is run. Any idea!

@nikgnomic I think you saved the day for me. I had to reinstall some sound card profiles, but even after that, I still was seeing sound crashes left and right. Disabling (masking) pipewire.service and pipewire.socket in my case appears to alleviate symptoms.

@Philosopher it’s possible you’re dealing with a different issue. You can try some troubleshooting steps here: PulseAudio/Troubleshooting - ArchWiki

Or look for other similar threads in the forums with sound not working after x kernel update (I have seen a few).

If the systemd service and socket for Pipewire is similar to PulseAudio
a user probably needs to use

systemctl --user mask pipewire.socket --now

--now option also stops the socket immediately instead of from next reboot

The service would only usually need to be disabled

systemctl --user disable pipewire.service --now

For anyone referring to this thread, see also the part about reinstalling sound card profiles above. In my case, the issue was due to both sound card profiles getting erased, and the experimental pipewire package being set to seemingly take over as pulseaudio back-end.

Did I mention sound card profiles?
